Narcissistic Personality (NPD) Therapists in Indianapolis, IN

While I see a wide range of clients, many of my clients have struggled with narcissistic family members or partners, dysfunctional families (now & in childhood), depression, and anxiety.
Have you spent your life overachieving, working hard, taking care of others, doing all the right things, and yet things aren't working out how you expected them to? Are your relationships often one-sided, where you give a lot but no one takes care of you? I see you. My practice focuses on those who have "done all the right things," and are wondering why things are still so hard.

I work with clients who have experienced narcissistic abuse, fear they possess narcissistic traits, or have been told by their loved ones that they have narcissistic issues to address.
I provide a confidential, judgment-free space to explore anything on your mind. Asking hard questions together, we'll process what hurts, uncover strengths, look closer at relationships and open up creative resources. I have experience working with spiritual beliefs and religious trauma, parenting through the lifespan, midlife identity shifts and relational concerns, including high conflict divorce. People who work with me often discover that presenting symptoms go much deeper than they thought.

I have been in the fields of mental health and substance abuse for over 20 years. I enjoy working with all populations. In trying to navigate through substance abuse and mental health issues, there are many factors that envelope a person's ability to cope with life. I understand that asking for help can be difficult and identifying a need for change can induce some fears. I can help you identify any changes that are needed and offer encouragement and support through your journey of self preservation.

We all create a set of expectations of ourselves, our world, and others, beginning with our earliest relationships. I enjoy working with clients who are interested in exploring how these beliefs either strengthen or distort our approach to relationships, medical issues, trauma, and/or challenges. I have a general practice dealing with issues of depression, anxiety, adjustment, marital, and family issues. I also work with clients and their families who are coping with medical and/or genetic diagnoses. I see soldiers and/or their spouses who are adjusting to military related issues and deployments.

I see adults for individual psychotherapy and also provide psychological testing for children, adolescents, and adults. I work from the psychoanalytic tradition, where I emphasize the role of a patient's early attachments in the development of his/her sense of self and others. I appreciate the importance of the patient-therapist relationship and understand that trust is a necessary part of the treatment process, which includes maintaining a confidential and safe place where each patient is able to explore and work through the presenting concerns.

I am a licensed therapist with a Masters in Social Work. My degree has given me the fundamentals necessary to embark on the journey of becoming a licensed mental health therapist. Making sure my client’s understand their own problems properly while involving them in preparation for a plan of action is a goal I strive for as a therapist.

What type of therapy is best for narcissistic personality disorder?
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is best treated with talk therapy, which could involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, schema therapy, gestalt therapy, or similar approaches. A therapist will help a patient uncover the feelings that may drive their behavior and discover how to engage with themselves and those around them with greater empathy and understanding, fewer demands, and less defensiveness, with the goal of developing a more authentic sense of self that enables healthier relationships.
How do therapists treat NPD?
By developing a strong therapeutic relationship, and continually focusing patients on relationships, community, and connection, a therapist, through talk therapy, may be able to help someone with NPD change. In sessions, a therapist will help an individual achieve relief from their current stressors, including the treatment of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression. A therapist may also help an individual to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms, learn new ways of interacting with others, and eventually become able to feel and display empathy.
Can a narcissist be cured with therapy?
Therapy can be effective. After a serious setback or great loss, someone with NPD may be forced to recognize that they are not immune to life’s challenges. That can spur feelings of melancholy and depression that lead them to seek professional help. Once an individual decides to seek help, they have already taken a step that the majority of those with NPD never will. Still, people with NPD often quit therapy as they naturally resist feeling vulnerable, being challenged, or admitting to flaws.
How can you get narcissistic personality disorder treatment for someone?
It is notoriously difficult to convince someone with NPD to seek help. With their feelings of superiority, they may be unlikely to recognize or acknowledge that they have a problem, or that their problem is narcissism. Sometimes, they are aware that they are arrogant and that others resent them but they don’t see it as a problem because they are convinced of their superiority. People with NPD have trouble maintaining relationships, but family members and others who do feel close to them, and whose presence they value, may be able to encourage them to seek therapy.
