My passion is to help people rebuild their relationship with God; to thrive in sobriety. I have extensive experience with individuals that struggle with addictive and compulsive behaviors such as: sex, pornography, drugs, alcohol, codependent relationships, etc. Over the past few years, I obtained more specialized education to specifically assist with sex, pornography and lust addiction through the work of Dr. Patrick Carnes Ph.D; a pioneer in the field of sex addiction. His work combined with a method to heal relational/attachment wounds, called "IFS", is the best strategy that I have found for recovery.

I am a licensed therapist with a Masters in Social Work. My degree has given me the fundamentals necessary to embark on the journey of becoming a licensed mental health therapist. It has helped me learn to identify what people think and how they react to different situations. I am able to appropriately work with others and help them without making them feel uncomfortable. Making sure my client’s understand their own problems properly while involving them in preparation for a plan of action is a goal I strive for as a therapist.

I work with people who are experiencing emotional distress and looking for lasting change in their lives. Depression, anxiety, feelings of sadness and hopelessness, distressing thoughts, and self criticism can make life unbearable and dampen one's spirit. My style of therapy focuses on building an understanding of one's distress, its relationship to the past, and how its shaped you into the person you are now. Together we'll think about the problems you face and carve a path toward a more fulfilling life. We are changed by every relationship in our lives. And my hope is our relationship will bring about the healing you seek.

Many of my patients seek care for mood disorders, anxiety, or other mental health conditions that may benefit from medication management as part of their treatment plan. They may have tried therapy alone and found it helpful but feel there is still something missing in their journey towards wellness. These clients want a comprehensive approach that combines both psychotherapy and medication to achieve better mental health outcomes. Their goals include finding the right balance of medication to complement their therapy, improving their quality of life, and gaining stability in their emotional and mental well-being.

Taking that first step to begin therapy takes courage. Trying to find a new therapist is daunting. I have deep respect for the bravery clients must have to embark in therapy. Many of us have experienced trauma, battled addiction, or been depressed. I feel fortunate to be allowed into the most vulnerable parts of my clients’ lives and I take that responsibility seriously. I will show compassion, acceptance, and authenticity during every interaction. I was a patient long before I was a therapist, so I come to therapy understanding the fear and anxiety that arises with allowing yourself to open up to someone.

How do gambling rehabilitation programs work?

There are both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs. However, for some individuals, an outpatient facility may not offer enough hands-on care, and for other individuals, an inpatient facility may be too much. Both types of care have knowledgeable health professionals including physicians (in the case of residential programs), psychologists, counselors, psychotherapists, and recovered mentors.

How do gambling 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Abstinence and maintenance are key for 12-step gambling disorder programs. Individuals in a 12-step group rely on each other for support and accountability. In addition, there is often a spiritual element to these programs, whereby belief in a higher power can help the individual overcome their tendencies. If an individual genuinely wants to cease gambling, attending a 12-step program along with regular psychotherapy can be highly effective.

How long does therapy take for gambling disorder?

Recovering from gambling disorder takes time and effort. There’s no precise timeline for treatment, but a person can see change if they stick with therapy and if they have the will and desire to stop. Treatment for gambling disorder requires honesty in therapy, a commitment to understanding triggers, as well as the development of coping skills. Making lifestyle changes is also important, such as staying away from lotteries, online gambling, and casinos.

Is relapse a problem for those with a gambling disorder?

Gambling disorder is often chronic and can be life-long; therefore relapse may present a problem for some individuals. But effective treatment can bring a person’s life under control. To remain healthy and on track, the individual may need to regularly check in with their support group or psychotherapist. Frequently refreshing their tools of recovery can be helpful.
