In couple's therapy, communication training, clarifying patterns of interaction and
family
history combine to allow partners to better understand each other.
Starting therapy can be a difficult decision so I help clients to be candid and open and to approach therapy as a cooperative effort of assessment, planning and treatment. Clients benefit from being understood for how they are at the present time and from respect for the pace at which they wish to work. A careful assessment allows the use of the right therapy approach of the many specific strategies that have been developed in recent years.

Most of our life’s challenges involve relationships. The ability to develop and maintain healthy relationships is an indication of psychological health. This is true in personal relationships as well as professional relationships. But as we all know relationships are complicated and often confusing. In our current climate we rely more and more on our devices to be the means in which we communicate. As a result we encounter more conflict with decreasing levels of satisfaction and fulfillment. We also are noticing decreased levels of social comfort. In general, life is significantly more complicated. I’m here to help guide you.

I am culturally sensitive and can fully understand the nuances unique to interfaith relationships,
family
, or marriage.
I help clients imagine and create their best lives by exploring how past influences and patterns may be holding them back or blocking their paths. Together we’ll explore how your thoughts determine your feelings and behavior (cognitive behavioral therapy). We’ll also talk about the influential forces behind your long-term relationships (attachment theory), and how early relationships and decisions made as a child may be impacting your personality today. As a wife of 30 years with three adult children, I come to you from a place of genuine compassion and understanding for the complexities of life.

I provide holistic treatment for anxiety, mood disorders, ADHD, life transitions,
family
of origin concerns, and more.
Life often hands us challenges we don't feel capable of managing. Our thoughts, feelings, and expectations can be so overwhelming that they become obstacles to making decisions and living our lives to the fullest. Therapy is a safe environment to understand our thoughts and feelings, face pain and fear, and align our lives to our values. The freedom that comes from understanding and facing our challenges is well worth the effort. In treatment, I help cultivate an environment of trust and compassion to face and overcome life's challenges through an integration of CBT, ACT, ERP, relational, and dynamic therapies.

We are conditioned by our
family
-of-origin and rarely select incorrectly when connecting with others.
Human connection is a necessity. Yet, why do the ones we love the most seem to hurt us in the worst ways? If only they would listen, be understanding and meet our needs. Love should be easy, yes? What if I told you these paradigms of thinking hinder our ability to fully connect and get the love and relationships we desire? My area of focus is couples, married and unmarried, as well as families and adults/adolescents in dysfunctional relationship systems.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
