I have formal experience using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma-Focused CBT, trauma Informed therapy, and play therapy in a individual, family, and parent- child structure.
Being a human is hard work! In therapy, we can learn, grow, and play with our experiences as a team. Together, we can learn to accept and value both the amazing and difficult things that come with a rich, meaningful life. Sometimes the challenges of life get in the way of our ability to access our individual and collective power to heal. Therapy offers a space to discover the parts of us that have become burdened and lovingly invite them to reconnect with our truest selves.

In my approach to child therapy, I bring a distinctive perspective rooted in the intersection of play therapy, child development, and early relational health.

I assist children, adults, couples, and families in addressing the concerns that may be holding them back from the life they want.
One specialty of mine is working with children who have behavioral or emotional concerns. This includes anxiety, depression, school problems, friend problems, sibling fighting, and anger outbursts. For children I especially believe that all behavior is purposeful and therefore I address the deeper underlying cause to produce long lasting change.

Parents: You want the best for your child, but you don't know what to do to help him or her.
Women: Your moods feel out of control. Perhaps you see a connection between your moods and hormones, either on a monthly basis, or since becoming pregnant, or since having your child. These are concerns, and, instead of blaming yourself, let's work together to put you in charge again.

My approach is to understand my client through a complete history of childhood and adult experiences so that we can together explore how the client perceives the world.
I see adults, couples, children and adolescents. I have extensive training in play therapy which is the primary approach that I use for children under 13. This training also allows me to try imaginative ways to help people communicate. I believe clear, open communication can be healing in a family or with a couple.

As a therapist I have helped individuals, couples, and children who were hurting, find their way to healing.
It takes a lot of courage to open up to someone, when so many people haven’t felt safe. Everyone has a story that deserves to be heard. I am here to listen to your story. It is important. You are important. Allow me to walk alongside you as you unpack what has happened in your life and how to move forward. Maybe it is time for some self-compassion. I am happy to answer questions, and we can take it slow. I hope you will consider moving toward taking care of yourself, and call me.

I love working with kids from ages 6 and up, but I also really love helping young adults with their transitions into adulthood which is typically 18-24.
Having worked in mental health for 10 years has allowed me to learn when to be gentle and when to push people a bit further than maybe they think they're ready for. I want to meet clients where they are, but I also will call people out if they do not seem like they're putting their best foot forward. Overall, I am very cool, calm, and collected.

I enjoy working with children, teenagers, and young adults, as well as integrating parent and family involvement.
I pull from a variety of techniques to create an individualized treatment approach. I often apply skills training to assist with adaptive coping mechanisms, interpersonal relationships, executive functioning, and self-esteem. I create space for emotional exploration and processing, sometimes utilizing play, art, and movement.

My specialty for the past many years has been children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral and neurological issues.
People have asked me over the years why I continue to be a therapist. I think a poem by Emily Dickinson answers that question. "If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life from aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting Robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain."

The decision to begin counseling can be intimidating, exhilarating; and, ultimately, a life changer. Counseling at Sunstone Health & Wellness is done in a very relaxed, conversational way to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Most of the time, we know the solutions to our own problems. But there are those rare occasions when we all need a little extra support, education, and resources to help us continue on the path to living the best life possible. Counseling can be a powerful tool to create change and take action in the life you've always wanted to live.

As a therapist, I bring a wealth of life experience as well as over 15 years of professional expertise with children in various settings, particularly those within the foster care system.
Consistent with several views expressed within the field of Positive Psychology, I believe in focusing on an individual's strengths and virtues to help individuals and families thrive. In addition to this approach, my collaborative, non-pathologizing style utilizes the inherent virtues of growth and change within individuals and families, allowing for a deeper understanding of each client's unique processes and functions, setting the stage for clients to develop self-agency and become the experts in their family system.

Child Therapists

What can a child therapist help with?

A therapist can help with any difficult experience a child may encounter growing up, including learning problems or anxiety related to school, relationship challenges with friends or parents, bullying, intense emotions or phobias, divorce and family dynamics, or the death of a pet or loved one. A therapist can help children process their experience and develop coping skills in an age-appropriate way.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
