I view therapy as a safe and sacred space for processing life experiences, emotions, thoughts, and trauma in order to achieve one’s goals and necessary growth. My goal as a therapist is to collaborate with clients to understand their thought processes, address barriers to wellness, and identify ways in which they can achieve their goals. I believe that clients are the experts of their own lives: however, sometimes we need an outside perspective to help re-frame our thinking. I’m here to work with you to increase self-awareness and empower you to approach life in a way that enhances health and well-being.

Many of us recognize that “something” in our lives needs to change for us to become happier and to improve the quality of our lives. Often times we feel either stuck or become ambivalent about taking steps because of the fear of what change will lead to. My style is active collaboration that aligns the behaviors with the values of the individual I am working with in a nonjudgmental and respectful environment. I believe it is very important to have the individual set the goals they would like to accomplish in therapy. I work with individuals who want to live more fully but aren't always sure how to start . Many feel misunderstood, disconnected, overwhelmed by expectations, or uncertain about where they're headed. They often find themselves navigating life transitions, anxiety, and questions of self worth. Many carry intersecting cultural, familial, and lived experiences that shape how they move through the world - and they're looking for a therapist who sees and honors that.

I have been a therapist for 20 years and have treated adult clients with mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and trauma, as well as dual diagnosis, substance abuse, and problem gambling. I have also seen adolescents in treatment for substance abuse and problem gambling issues. I believe it is important for the client to feel secure and at ease in a supportive therapeutic environment, without judgment, and that it is necessary to empower the client to resolve the issue and live his or her best life.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
