Life is a journey. However, our journeys often include interruptions as a result of experiences such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, issues resulting from trauma, loss, divorce , relationship issues, parenting issues, and issues with aging, to name a few. These experiences can negatively impact our thoughts, feelings, and behavior and our overall quality of life. It is important to know that your life does not have to remain negatively impacted by what has happened to you.

My approach as a registered art therapist is to use creative and sensory exploration to navigate deeper feelings when words are difficult to articulate. Art therapy is ageless; any age can benefit with no artistic skill required! Some challenges I help children process through include: anxiety, trauma, ADHD, school related issues, and divorce . I also offer the option of traditional talk therapy to work through parenting, pregnancy, anxiety, depression, and life changes. Parents talk through discipline, bonding, anger, and building trust with their kids. Tele-therapy is also available for Indiana and Illinois residents.

Thank you for your interest in my services. In 2018, I decided to limit my scope of practice to custody/parenting time evaluations and other domestic forensic evaluations, reunification therapy, and co-parenting coaching. At this time, due to the volume of demand for evaluations, I am not taking new reunification or co-parent coaching clients. When that changes, I will immediately announce that here and on my website (https://parentingguidanceservices.com. You can find out more about these services at the website or please feel free to email me at byrdke@gmail.com. All of my communication takes place through email.

As a past ABA therapist and trained Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral counselor, I have learned the proper way to guide families through these waves of emotional dysregulation. I break down the familial structure to help build a new foundation for effective communication in families. I enjoy repairing family dynamics and bringing people together. I provide the tools and techniques that help individuals, who have experienced trauma and are dealing with a range of issues, become more functional and more engaged in their own lives.

While I am not accepting new clients at this time, there are therapists in my practice who are. Feel free to call or visit our website for more information. Picking up the phone to call a counselor can be an anxiety-provoking experience. But as difficult as it can be to ask for help, I know from experience that it is well worth it to collaborate with a professional who understands you, genuinely wants to help you reach your goals and become the best person you can be. I look forward to establishing connections with individuals who are looking for practical, compassionate and effective solutions to their problems.

Divorce Therapists

How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?

Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.

What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?

There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioral, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.

When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?

When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.

How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
