“Shame dies when stories are told in safe places,” writes Ann Voskamp. And shame is woven into so many of our stories - whether we're dealing with depression, trauma, loss, or challenging relationships - past or present. In my work with clients, I seek to provide that safe place where those stories can begin to be told, healing can begin, and shame can die. I honor my clients’ stories and I value the collaborative relationship so necessary for healing and growth to occur, realizing, in the words of Lysa TerKeurst, that “there is this beautiful thing called imperfect progress – slow steps of progress wrapped in grace.”

Real change happens when you finally feel safe enough to be yourself. I help by offering a therapeutic relationship rooted in empathy and authenticity. I don’t show up as a distant observer. I show up as a real person ready to support you through your hardest moments.

Anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms can all play a part in these challenges.
In my office, I use a collaborative approach through a holistic lens to help my clients reach their full potential. I see almost all ages and use my skill set to meet each client where they are in life. Clients who work with me can expect a therapist who is empathetic, well-trained, and direct when it is necessary.

Sometimes our internal voice is unkind, we may struggle to set boundaries, and our people-pleasing tendencies may get in the way of our own happiness. We may struggle to understand why this happens to even to know how to overcome these challenges. Life can truly feel like an emotional roller coaster and we can't seem to figure out how to get off of the ride. This is where therapy can come in to place. Through therapy you can learn the necessary skills to get off of the unhealthy roller coaster and find a path forward filled with safe, fun, and healthy relationships with yourself and others.

At times we may feel lost or overwhelmed. We may have uncertainty when it comes to navigating challenges we face. We seek freedom from our struggles and more balance in our day-to-day lives. That is where therapy with me comes in to play. In my office, I believe that there is a place for every person to be who they are while learning ways to navigate the world around them. In my work with clients, we work as a team in order to build up healthy strategies to cope, explore deeper reasons behind our struggles, and heal from past hurts.

Fear, sadness, rejection—all want acknowledgment so that we will not stay stuck in past pain.
Most people when they approach engagement with therapy first want a caring and listening ear. They want to tell their story because that's where connection begins. Many of us have never really had the experience of someone taking the time to openly listen, not proposing solutions or opinions or judgments. This is the gift I enjoy offering to my clients.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
