I specialize in the areas of anxiety, depression, addiction, anger management,
marital
therapy, divorce recovery, and effective parenting.
I believe people seek out counseling for one of two reasons. First, they find themselves in a crisis situation with their life out of balance. This may be due to the discomfort of anxiety or depression, an out of control addiction, the stress of an unsatisfying relationship, a child who is struggling or the heartache of grief. Secondly, their life may be in balance but they are at a decision point or feel a need for self-improvement including career concerns, a desire to improve a relationship or a need to explore obtaining their fullest potential. Both are equally valid reasons to seek the assistance of a caring professional.

I believe therapy offers us a unique opportunity to deal with the challenges we inevitably face. throughout our lives. Within each of us lies the ability for personal growth and insight. We may find ourselves struggling with life transitions, job loss, relationships, personal issues and a great deal of uncertainty. I believe that during these times the therapy process is beneficial in finding, creating and empowering the self towards healthy, meaningful growth and change. Finding meaning and connection takes courage and determination to face difficult, often painful situations.

I also believe my many years of
marriage
(29 years so far) help me understand the challenges and joys of longterm relationships.
I have been working with individuals and couples for 20 years. Many of the clients I see suffer from depression, anxiety, work and relationship issues (including communication problems, feeling disconnected, infidelity, and divorce). I help clients find new ways of coping, seeing and thinking, and relating. Although I am knowledgeable and skilled in several therapeutic methods, I don't believe in "one-size-fits-all" therapy. Instead, I adapt my treatment plan to meet the needs, goals, and personality of each client.

My caseload is full until at least May, 2023. Hi, my name is Sean, and welcome to my page. Let me share a bit about myself. I decided to become a counselor because I realized that one of the things I most enjoyed in life was having deep and meaningful conversations with people that helped them think through issues going on in their lives. I pursued formal education so that I could be of more help to people and turn what I enjoyed into a career. I completed my degree in 2017. Since entering the counseling field I have gotten to work with a variety of populations including: adults, couples, families, and children.

I have 38 years experience counseling people with relationship issues; couples with family and
marital
problems; parents needing help with teens; straight and gay/lesbian couples wanting a healthier relationship. Relationship problems trigger issues like low self esteem, depression, and anxiety. I believe that most unhappiness stems from one or more problem relationships. My ideal client is tired of others trying to control or change them through behaviors like criticism, nagging, threatening, blaming, and complaining. And, my ideal client is one who wants to stop using these same behaviors that are harmful to their relationships.

How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
