My experience includes working with specifying disorders such as: GAD, Moderate to Severe Depression, PTSD, ADHD and Substance Use Disorder.
As your therapist, we will process anxiety, depression, past traumas, reroute negative behaviors, & learn how lived experiences impact the way you view the world currently. My clients often seek therapy because they are wanting to uncover the meanings behind their emotions; together, we are often able to uncover the meaning behind these emotions by better understanding past traumas encountered. Only then, can we replace negative behaviors that have stemmed from these traumas, together. I provide a safe & genuine space for LGBTQ clients & practice from an inclusive & client-centered perspective.

I have worked with behavioral health (anxiety, substance use); mood disorders including depression, Bipolar, and dual diagnoses; trauma and PTSD; and personality disorders.
As a therapist, I am most excited to see clients motivated to explore their unknown strengths, widen their horizons, increase their abilities to make informed decisions and lead a life of meaning as they define it. Everyone I have worked with brings to therapy a foundation upon which to grow. Regardless of the problem, an enhanced sense of self is possible. Instilling hope of something better in life is one of my greatest motivations, and assisting others in achieving their goals drew me to this profession.

Oftentimes, individuals seek therapy because of symptoms that have become too much to cope with. These include anxiety, depression, social issues, self-harm, school issues, insomnia, anger, etc. These symptoms usually indicate something deeper is going on - a root cause if you will. As a trauma therapist, I specialize in working with children, teens, and adults experiencing these symptoms, with a special focus on complex trauma, grief, cultural adjustments, life transitions, and relational issues. I have experience working with multicultural populations including military, immigrant, refugee, and third culture kids (TCKs and ATCKs).

The story of our lives often shape our day to day experiences. As we open up to our story and how we ended up at a certain space in our lives, we begin to see patterns. We begin to see unhealthy ways we have responded to people, relationships that have been less than productive, or events that unfolded different than we had hoped. In order to grow and set a new course, we need to identify the patterns that have lead us here. Therapy is about doing just that - uncovering underlying, most the time subconscious, ways of thinking, so that we can become the people that we want to be.

Choosing the right therapist can feel overwhelming. With so many options out there, it’s hard to know where to begin. But what if the real key to healing wasn’t about finding someone with the right qualifications or techniques, but someone who listens deeply and has genuine curiosity about you?

I’m Andy Saunders, a therapist who shows up as a real person first. I became a therapist because I’ve lived through many of the same struggles my clients face—anxiety, identity confusion, the weight of trauma, addiction, and years of not feeling at home in my own skin. I know what it’s like to question your worth, to hide parts of yourself, and to feel lost in your own story. My own journey through recovery, mental health treatment, and embracing my sexuality shaped the way I sit with people: with honesty, compassion, and absolutely no judgment.

Each and every single person on this planet has the ability to change his or her life- it simply takes the correct approach to unlock it. Figuring out this approach can sometimes be incredibly difficult, hopeless, infuriating and a multitude of other not-so-pleasant adjectives. This is where therapy can help. It cannot erase what happened in the past, nor can it magically make the future pain-free. It can however critically analyze and assess the present and identify ways to move forward and pursue the life and identity you wish to cultivate!

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
