Eve Brownstone, LCPC, Expressive Arts Therapist and Certified Psychodramatist I have been providing compassionate care for the creative soul for 32 years. I enjoy supporting and empowering my clients to look within to gain more self-awareness, self-love, and self-acceptance. Art therapy, dance / movement therapy, guided imagery, meditation, journaling, and role-play are some of the tools used for this journey. The arts are excellent outlets to cope with stress and therapeutic tools that get below the surface to the heart of the matter. Not everyone’s first language is verbal and the arts can help us speak. Speak our own truth.

I am comfortable working with a wide range of issues, and working with me is best for clients who are interested in not only talking through their problems, but physically moving about them and getting a felt sense of everything that’s going on. As a dance movement therapist, I think the body can be a marvelous source for solutions and insights, when the movement is approached in a way that’s comfortable and safe. Talking is also an important part of the process, as we are whole mind/body systems, and we work best when both are accessible and well connected to each other.

I am a Board Certified Dance / Movement Therapist trained in EMDR.
Suffering is often the result of less than nurturing relationships and experiences. Fear can become imprisoned in the body. Family and culture can dictate how safe it is, or not safe, to express and be yourself. My immigrant experience from Taiwan allows me deeper empathy with people navigating life transitions and relating to different cultures and new relationships. At Embodied Way Psychotherapy PLLC, I strive to empower individuals within the context of systemic injustice and complications. My work is to provide compassion and wisdom so that you can feel fully alive and authentic in your body, your world and your relationships.

You feel overwhelmed, overworked, and the stress makes it hard to focus or even breath sometimes. Being an entrepreneur, small business owner, fellow creative, self-starter, or go-getter, you value being a risk-taker and know what you want for yourself and your family, but you just get overwhelmed with navigating the moving pieces and getting into habits of taking care of others before yourself. You are questioning "am I going to make it?" or "can I do this?" and part of you is having a dance party saying "hell yeah!" and another part is pointing a judging finger or exhausted from comparison fatigue. Lets make a change!

Somatic Experiencing focuses on the wisdom of the physical body: sensation, movement , image, emotion, self-pacing, support, meaning.
Most of us humans have experienced trauma or simply too much stress. Thoughts, body sensations, and images/memories/dreams can cause more emotional and physical pain--and vice versa. To get rid of these unwanted things completely may be expected goals; but to diminish and manage them with less pain or tension is more realistic. To be understood by others, to feel more safe, to feel supported, to receive usable feedback and new ideas--these are goals I will surely help any client experience. Somatic Experiencing facilitates clients in moving forward, at their own pace, building more resilience self-acceptance and confidence.

In Dance / Movement Therapy sessions, we will utilize the mind and body in an integrative way to explore your strengths and seek wisdom from within.
You have felt unseen and unheard. But you know deep down that you are worthy. I know that you are. The challenges in life you once were able to navigate with ease are now more daunting than ever. You have turned to avoidance, substances, shopping, you name it! But none of these are helping. What you need now is someone to empathize with you. Someone who gets it, to see you and support you while you examine those unpleasant feelings and sensations.

I take a relational, trauma-informed approach, and I use my dance and movement background to integrate embodied paths to healing. I will honor all of the experiences, values, and recalibrations that make you exactly who you are today: a nuanced, complex, unique individual who is worth knowing.

Through in-person couples therapy, you will practice listening to one another, share vulnerable emotions safely, reconnect with empathy, and use partner movement to increase affection and support.
You feel desperate. The disconnection between you and your spouse does not feel good. It’s been so difficult lately, you feel like you are drifting apart and that feels scary, it gives you anxiety. You miss your spouse, you miss being together, going out on dates, and having fun. But lately, it’s been so hard to see eye to eye and you seem to be arguing “for nothing”. It’s like you are speaking a different language. You don’t want to separate and neither does your spouse, you want to receive help before it gets any worse. I hear you, and I’m here to guide you in drawing closer to your spouse again.

Maybe you have tried traditional talk therapy, yoga, or self-help apps but you haven't found that sense relief from stress, anxiety, depression or grief. Grounded in the use of mindfulness and the creative arts therapies - art, movement , music, and drama - we believe the steps towards clarity, growth, and empowerment are about much more than talking. We are constantly thinking, feeling, sensing, expressing, interpreting, and responding to daily experiences. Your sessions will holistically explore all of these parts of your experience while gaining new skills to cope with stress, trauma, relationships, loss, or a new life change.

Congratulations for taking the first step towards a healthier you! As a Licensed Counselor (LPC) and Dance / Movement Therapist (R-DMT), I am dedicated to providing the space and support you need to reach your full potential. Coming from a body-based approach to therapy, I use the mind/body connection and a holistic perspective to assist you in navigating the speed bumps of life. Turning the volume up on what your body is trying to tell you through slowing down and learning your own body’s language, helps to foster healing and promote growth from within.

For trauma, I draw on my training in dance / movement therapy and sensorimotor psychotherapy to approach the body gently and sensitively to help you reconnect to your body in a way what feels safe for you.
I am licensed in IL and CA and provide remote therapy in both states. If you have suffered a recent loss or have experienced ongoing trauma, I believe in a collaborative approach which acknowledges your strengths and deepens the connections that are already within you. I’m very passionate about working alongside other helping professionals (therapists, doctors, caregivers) to address the effects of trauma and promote well-being. I also specialize in working with people during periods of great adjustment and life transitions, such as refugees, immigrants, artists, and college students as well as people with OCD.

My training as a dance / movement therapist and yoga teacher allows me to attend to your whole body/mind/spirit in our work.
I believe my role as a therapist is to help you hold and find meaning in your pain, and delight with you in what is playful and pleasureful in your life. My approach is warm, direct, and collaborative. I am interested in creating a genuine, transparent and accountable relationship with you. My hope is that within our relationship we can identify and interrupt harmful patterns that may emerge in your relationships and reinforce patterns that bring you joy and connection. Therapy is inherently political, and I aim to engage with my clients in ways that are liberatory, anti-racist and affirming of their intersecting identities.

I perform traditional talk therapy, but often supplement that with dance / movement therapy or other creative art modalities.
Sometimes life presents us with difficult challenges and we feel lost. We may be haunted by trauma, feel stuck in relationships, have negative thoughts cycling around in our minds, and find that we are sabotaging ourselves. Changing life circumstances-both positive (like the birth of a child) or negative (loss of a job)-can cause anxiety and despair. I address these issues by fostering a warm and trusting therapeutic relationship where clients become more aware of their thoughts and feelings, make sense of their experiences, and move forward in their lives.

I use an integrative approach using elements of Yoga, Mindfulness, and Dance Movement Therapy as well as incorporating Cognitive Behavioral and insight-oriented interventions, whatever is best suited to the needs of the individual.
Everyone gets stuck now and then, may feel lost or alone. Sometimes you may just need a little support an unbiased listener to help gain insight or clarity. Other times you may need help to delve more deeply into your emotions to transform and grow. I approach therapy as a collaborative process where together we explore your life challenges with curiosity but without judgement. Although not always easy, therapy can be deeply rewarding. An exploration that will help you reconnect with your inner strength and wisdom, better able to overcome obstacles and to move towards a greater sense of wellbeing.

How can I find a therapist in Illinois?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
