I have witnessed how trauma can uniquely impact individuals on multiple domains of functioning. When trauma goes unaddressed, it can manifest into anxiety, self-esteem issues, depression, attachment-related concerns, dissociative symptoms, and/or self-injurious behaviors. These intense emotional and behavioral responses can become overwhelming and confusing for everyone involved. When adding in any current stressors, these symptoms can feel more exacerbated and pronounced. It is important to know you are not alone, and we can work together to find ways to help make these challenging emotional experiences feel more manageable.

Humans are built for connection, making relationships such an integral piece of our lives. Therefore, when something is going wrong in our relationships, we may feel confusion, sadness, disappointment, uncertainty, or even fear. My goal as your therapist is to provide a safe and comfortable environment where you can truly explore these emotional experiences, understand them, learn how they affect your relationships, and create change. Clients will learn to identify, attune to, and express these parts of themselves in a new, vulnerable way.

I hold a Doctorate Degree and a license as a Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). I have extensive professional experience, training, & skill supporting children & adults with concerns including relationship & family conflict, trauma, autism, intellectual disabilities, behavior issues, ADHD, & parent coaching. I worked in residential, hospitals, private practice, & in-house counseling. I facilitated group & individual supervision, parenting education, couples, groups, family, & substance use therapy. I have taught counseling courses and developed training curriculum.

I believe in a client centered and solution focused approach. I utilize a variety of treatment approaches including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. I earned my undergraduate degree in Anthropology at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. After which I attended the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine where I completed my Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work. I am also certified as a substance use counselor by the Illinois Division of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.

My goal is to assist people in making sense of change so that we can learn from it, rather than feel bogged down by it. I work with adolescents, adults, and older children, helping them to clarify values, work past crises, and develop skills to navigate day to day challenges. My approach is primarily social constructivist, while still drawing from psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral theories. In my work I draw on my experience as a mother of three teenagers. I also work with parents to help them with strategies when struggling with their children and teens.

Through colonization and oppression, individuals have become disconnected from their bodies. As a trauma informed therapist, I will guide you in becoming more aware of your body's response to situations. I do this through mindfulness and other forms of therapy, such as EMDR.

I get deep satisfaction from working with couples, using best practices from training in Emotionally Focused Therapy to recreate emotional connection. I also am trained in using EMDR to help individuals experience relief from the burden of traumatic experiences. Another specialty is Discernment Counseling, a discipline in which I am fully certified and which offers couples an opportunity to gain clarity about whether they remain married, continue as they are for the time being, or commit to the challenging work of couples therapy.
