Do you feel that you are all alone and no one will ever understand what you are going through? We all need extra support and to know that we are not alone. I hope to foster a therapeutic relationship where you feel nurtured, respected, and know that your thoughts and feelings matter. My approach to therapy is strengths-based. I treat the whole person and do not have a one-size-fits-all approach. I believe each individual is unique and can overcome any obstacle. I practice a non-judgmental and empathetic approach and support individuals as they confront their issues and help them realize their unique strengths.

Have you ever wondered how your childhood trauma/sexual abuse has affected you as an adult? Do you notice having difficulty opening up fully with others? Are you noticing negative relationship patterns? Do you experience negative self-talk/thinking? Childhood trauma has a funny way of sticking with us as adults. It can not only affect how we see ourselves, but how we show up with others in relationships, and how we view the world.

I specialize in working with clients with trauma, depression, anxiety, and neurodivergence.
Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself or others—even though you’ve tried to “figure it out” on your own? Maybe anxiety is running the show, past experiences still feel close to the surface, or you’re going through a transition that’s left you unsure of who you are or what comes next. You don’t have to navigate this alone. I specialize in supporting neurodivergent individuals who are searching for meaning, belonging, and a way of being that feels authentic, sustainable, and truly their own in a world that often misunderstands them or asks them to be otherwise.

As my work with clients has evolved to incorporate many of the evidence based developments in the practice of clinical psychology, the primary focus and nature of my work has evolved as well. My current client focus is with adult men and women (18+) whom I see in individual therapy in either my Lake Bluff or Orland Park offices. The therapeutic relationship developed between a client and therapist is a core driver of consequence in the outcome of therapy and informs my preference in working in-person (face to face, in office) with clients. The potential for sophisticated outcomes offered interpersonally is unparalleled

I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, loss/grief, childhood/developmental trauma, life transitions, and relationship difficulties.
Carrying the weight of caregiving alone? Those sleepless nights, endless to-do lists, and quiet tears. I see you. No one handed you a guidebook for this journey. You've poured your heart into caring for others, often forgetting to fill your own cup. Your relationships may have shifted, your dreams put on hold, the path ahead sometimes feeling impossibly foggy. But you don't have to walk it alone anymore. I'm here to listen, support, and help you rediscover joy amid the challenges. Together, we'll find gentle ways to nurture yourself while honoring your loving commitment to those who need you.

Clients often come with symptoms such as anxiety or depression, but once they feel some relief they choose to explore the underlying reasons for these symptoms.
I am an insight-oriented therapist, and as a person of faith, I integrate theology and psychology from a Christian perspective for clients who are desiring to have their faith be a part of their treatment. Nonetheless, I respect and work with those from a wide variety of faith backgrounds.

I support clients facing trauma, anxiety, depression, unhelpful habits, relationship struggles, and questions of life satisfaction.
My work is grounded in the belief that healing is about more than recovery–it's growth. It's not just about moving away from pain, but about moving toward more meaning, a clearer sense of self, deeper connections, and a life that feels more authentic and alive. It's the process of learning to trust yourself, letting go of what no longer serves you, and stepping into relationships and choices that feel more intentional. In this sense, healing is not only about relief but about possibility and the pursuit of a path toward a grounded, freer, and more meaningful life.

I have 25 years of experience in the treatment of issues including: emerging adulthood/ college age, relationship struggles, postpartum depression and anxiety, low self-esteem, marital conflict, adolescent treatment and generalized anxiety and depression.
The therapists in our practice joined together because of our shared belief that our clients, who have reached out for help in managing and overcoming the challenges their lives, each have a unique set of strengths that often need to be better understood and developed. In our own styles, we each use the therapeutic relationship to understand what is interfering with an individual's sense of fulfillment in life. We approach therapy from the perspective that, at our core, our clients are health seeking but may be repeating old patterns that are not serving them well.

This is the philosophy that guides Known Well Counseling. Caryn believes that being known (well) is transformative. Together, in a non-judgmental space, you will work to better understand yourself and take steps toward making meaningful change in your life.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
