Many people struggle with anxiety and depression as they cope with life's uncertainties. We are all redefining "normal." My training in CBT, EMDR, Strengths Centered, and Person Centered Therapy with men, women , children, elders, and caregivers is well rounded. People are dealing with trauma, abuse, employment issues, grief, mental illness, addiction, co-dependency, physical illness, parenting, divorce, retirement, and loss of identity. Everyone wants to know they have a "purpose." I specialize in helping clients with their journey. Most people want to feel safe, loved, understood, and appreciated. I can help with that.

Does life sometimes feel overwhelming? Do you or your child have a difficult time engaging in or completing everyday tasks? Does it seem like nobody understands what you’re going through? Sometimes children or adults experience situations in their life, past or present which can have a significant impact on their life, overall daily functioning and relationships. These situations can leave them feeling sad, angry, withdrawn, shameful, unmotivated or a variety of other emotions. These feelings and behaviors can be confusing for anyone and that is where therapy can help.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, have anxiety, or just not feeling like you’re firing on all cylinders? Life throws heavy stuff at all of us, and sometimes we need a partner to figure it out. That’s where I come in; I’m just a real person helping other real people. The idea of talking to a therapist can be scary- maybe you’re not ready to share your whole story, but that’s okay. My job is to help you figure out what you want to work on and go from there. I believe that therapy is a safe place where we can come up with solutions to some of the challenges you may be experiencing.

I have been providing psychological and behavioral services in the Chicagoland and Grand Rapids, Michigan area for the last 14 years. In session I am empathetic and positive, working collaboratively with each client, in overcoming life challenges. Due to the vast amount of experience I have gained in both psychotherapy as well as behavioral modification, my therapeutic approach is diverse and can be non-directive, guiding the client at their own pace, or directive in nature. My goal is to assist each client to a happier, healthier, productive life, in a safe environment.

Being a bi-racial (Korean and Black) Jewish female , I am curious about my patients.
Have you gone as far as you can in traditional psychotherapy? Are you looking to go deeper sooner? Do you want sustainable results within one to three sessions? Are you serious and committed to treatment? Then consider undergoing psychological surgery in addition to psychotherapy. For 28 years I have helped patients release fear, anger, shame, guilt, depression, or anxiety so they can experience sustaining self-love, joy, compassion, forgiveness, and discernment. If you have lost your way and want to remember who you really are, I am here to accompany you on your journey to heal at the deepest level possible.

Life’s chaos and competing needs are hard enough, don’t walk it alone. Rather than feeling alone and overwhelmed, let me help you find space to be heard, seen, and understood. Using my training in Perinatal Mental Health, I enjoy working with women in all life stages. Teens and families also need a space for honest connection and I can help you find avenues through your stuck places. Families that include special needs have unique struggles and often have trouble feeling heard and supported. Let’s build that safe place together.

My name is Maddy Hesslau and I offer individual counseling services primarily to teen girls and women . I know firsthand the courage it requires to reach out to a therapist. First, know that I am rooting for you in your healing process. Not only is reaching out to a therapist a courageous step but so is advocating for yourself and finding the best fit. The therapist-client relationship is one of the most significant effects to change. You or I may not be the best fit- however, I hope to hear your story and offer an idea of what the therapeutic process may look like in our counseling journey together.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
