Are you feeling overwhelmed by addiction, eating disorders, or trauma? Like Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh, does life often seem grey and dreary? Many of us find ways to cope with pain and trauma, sometimes turning to risky behaviors such as substance abuse or over or underusing processes such as food as an escape. Amid this mayhem, thriving seems impossible, and survival becomes the goal. Perhaps you're struggling with a sense of loneliness and isolation, or your relationships are suffering. The weight of these issues can feel unbearable, and it might seem like there's no way out. But there is hope.

I originally began Blending Families in 2002, to address the unique issues that step families (as well as foster and adoptive families), deal with on a daily basis, (torn loyalties, parallel parenting, ex spouses, raising step kids, etc...). I am committed to helping people help themselves, figure out what the issues are and solving the problems. I also have extensive experience working with parents of difficult teens, marital education and family dynamics. Clients tend to feel overwhelmed with the struggles they juggle every day. Most want someone who won't judge, who will listen, care and will help them figure out what to do.

One of my greatest joys in life is helping others. It hurts my heart to see others in pain believing something is wrong with them. I want you to know you are not alone. Life is full of commitments, work, stress, transitions, and other people. It is often hard to take time for ourselves. I work with clients experiencing a broad range of issues from anxiety and depression to managing grief or navigating divorce/separation. I strive to treat each client as an individual, meeting every client where they are along their life journey.

I am effective in helping adults young and old who struggle with anxiety, depression and low self-worth, and self-defeating patterns in their lives. Sometimes we feel too overwhelmed, ashamed, or discouraged to deal with these parts of ourselves, and need the help of an attuned listener to understand and work through our problems. The process of talking about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences within a trusting therapeutic relationship helps relieve emotional distress and increases your capacity to manage difficult feelings.

If you are struggling to manage your emotions and it is impacting you or your relationships with others in any way, I can help you. Together we will develop a plan to get to the root of these feelings, process the trauma and challenge your thinking pattern into a healthier more realistic truth. Rather short or long term, therapy is a process and if you are willing to commit to feeling better and step into a healthier version of yourself then it is my pleasure to walk that path with you.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
