Hi, my name is Maria Mangiardi, and I hold an LCPC license. My approach to therapy is looking at the total mind, body, and spirit of a person and how all areas of life can affect mental health. I specialize in a variety of areas, such as Anxiety, Depression, LGBTQ, and OCD, to name a few. I look at the totality of a person because I find that possible medical issues, relationship issues, and environmental influences can be a factor. I typically work with adults over the age of 18. I have many clients that question their life relationships, stressors, and internal struggles.

Are you feeling overwhelmed but not sure why, or maybe there are too many why's? Everything is spinning around in your head, and you don't know where to start? It's like a tangled ball of pain and experiences that are spilling into your daily life. Revealing itself over countless behaviors, emotions, and physical responses. I'm here to support you in releasing the pain that is holding you back from loving and accepting every part of you (yep, even those parts), and work on untangling all of that, so you can have more freedom to focus on the stuff that brings you joy.

We are often socialized to look outward, whether it’s to our family, friends, or societal expectations in order to fit in and succeed. Therapy is an opportunity to intentionally look inward at ourselves and help us find directions to live as our most authentic self.

If you're someone who feels like they have "been there, done that" when it comes to therapy and are looking for deeper understanding of yourself, I just might be your therapist. I'm someone who believes coping skills are fantastic, but challenging deeply-held emotional beliefs is what moves people towards lasting change. To do this, I make space for the people I work with to feel understood for exactly who they are. Because I know that when people are able to explore their full selves in a compassionate, curious way, they will be amazed at what they can change (or in some cases, learn to love and accept!).

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
