I also specialize in the challenges of parenthood (especially of men becoming fathers) and how "
family
of origin" issues are transmitted from one generation to the next.
I see adults for both individual and couple's therapy addressing many common areas of concern, including: stress; anxiety; depression; relationship issues; intimacy & communication; self-esteem & identity issues; work & life satisfaction; meaning & purpose; and general unhappiness.
My style is direct and collaborative. I use a flexible approach that is adapted to each individual or couple. My approach is especially effective at getting to the root of issues, sorting through the conflict and confusion, and portraying what the trouble is in a clear new light.

For many years, I have been helping my clients to lead happier and more fulfilling lives. One of my main psychotherapy approaches is cognitive-behavioral therapy, a well-established, efficient and effective form of psychotherapy. It directly targets the patient's thinking, and behavior, patterns that are producing psychological problems, and teaches the patient to change those patterns. In marital and
family therapy
, I help the parties to communicate better with one another and to reach agreements acceptable to all. If the children have behavior problems, I often help the parents to become more effective disciplinarians.

At Relate Psychological Services, I work with adults struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction, loss, role transitions, romantic and interpersonal relationship difficulties, and
family
of origin issues.
Now Accepting new clients (daytime hours 12pm-5pm). As humans, we experience an endless amount of transitions, highs, and lows that cumulatively come to define who we are. In this process, we may find ourselves struggling with anxiety, depression, and fear of the unknown. In an effort to cope with these challenges, we often develop patterns of thinking and behaving that don't serve us or honor our unique strengths and resiliency. In my practice, I work with individuals to create meaning from difficult experiences and to develop coping strategies that allow them to live with a greater sense of peace, personal power, and authenticity.

LifeSpan Counseling & Psychological Services offers services to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. In therapy, I tend to take a collaborative, egalitarian approach to treatment. I am open and nonjudgmental, and I take special time to tailor treatment approaches to fit each individual therapeutic relationship. I practice from a predominately existential-phenomenological framework where individual needs, meaning-making, and pursuit of happiness are emphasized. I also incorporate elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and attachment theory as needed.

We all feel sad, stressed, or anxious at times. That's a normal part of life to me. But if these feelings are interfering with personal and
family
relationships, work, or your feelings of self-confidence, counseling can help you find a more satisfying path. Especially since the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic, mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, and stress, have worsened. You may have increased your use of substances, hoping that they will help relieve your symptoms, only to find that they have made matters worse. Recognizing that you need outside assistance can be difficult.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
