If you’re struggling to cope with past traumas, I can help you identify how this is showing up in your present and offer the tools that will create the path to your desired future. Trauma impedes our natural ability as humans to be able to identify and reach goals, and connect and form relationships with others. I know that this can all be worked through with a positive therapeutic relationship and guidance to rediscovering the inner knowing you possess about what you truly need to thrive. My personal approach to therapy is what allows for others to connect with me- I am laid-back, direct, funny, caring, and non-judgement.

The therapeutic relationship is the most effective tool when helping clients identify patterns in their lives.
Therapy is about helping people recognize unproductive patterns, connecting past issues with current dynamics, and coping with life-changing events. When working with my clients, I actively engage with them to assess their problems, deal with barriers, and work through issues that require both change and acceptance.

At Kate Giandonato & Associates, we create an environment where you can safely look at yourself, relationships, and potential barriers to achieving your goals. I work from a systemic framework, and utilize psychodynamic principles alongside evidence based tools. My passion in treatment is to create a collaborative relationship built on authenticity, hope, and safety to make space for you to be your whole self and access healing from past experiences. I believe in the power of integration- that all parts of you deserve love and compassion. Together, we will address feelings, needs, beliefs, and the body's own wisdom, while also seeing issues in the context of the systems in which you exist.

Particular specialties of mine include mood disorders, relationship issues, survivors of childhood abuse and trauma, ADHD, women's issues, and grief and bereavement.
We all have words in our heart that are difficult to speak. Therapy is a great opportunity to bring voice to those words and make sense of their meaning so we can have a greater understanding of who we are and our place in this world. I view therapy as a unique opportunity to know and understand yourself in more profound and meaningful ways so as to allow true clarity, purpose, and healing in everyday life. We will move at a pace that feels comfortable to you, and, ultimately, we will work together to bridge your inner emotional life to past and current experiences to then provide a renewed and hopeful understanding of yourself.

In addition, I am an experienced divorce mediator and collaborative law professional, helping couples to divorce without litigation.
For many years, I have been helping my clients to lead happier and more fulfilling lives. One of my main psychotherapy approaches is cognitive-behavioral therapy, a well-established, efficient and effective form of psychotherapy. It directly targets the patient's thinking, and behavior, patterns that are producing psychological problems, and teaches the patient to change those patterns. In marital and family therapy, I help the parties to communicate better with one another and to reach agreements acceptable to all. If the children have behavior problems, I often help the parents to become more effective disciplinarians.

As a relationally trained therapist, I work with couples , families, and individuals. I like working clients in an open and collaborative manner, using systems theory and a culturally-attuned lens to create a space that is comfortable and productive. I am a queer, cis-ish, white, non-religious, poly-and-kink-affirming/aligned, chronically ill, person from the Chicagoland/NWI area. Because I have worked hard to understand myself and come to these identities, I try to create space for others to do the same in my own practice.

From everyday struggles and family stresses to traumatic experiences, our ways of coping are constantly challenged. In my practice I support individuals in the development of their resilience to enable them to solve difficult problems and begin to thrive. With 20 years of experience my depth of empathy and skills provide the foundation for a safe, colaborative relationship . I understand that isolation debilitates and shakes people in times of distress and that connection with others is crucial to healing. I see my role as helping people discover the value of connections and supporting them as they move through the process.

I recognize the importance of the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for positive change; my approach is client-centered, collaborative, and solution focused.
Life can be challenging, sometimes we don't know what is causing us to be uncomfortable; we just know that we are. Regardless of the reason, therapy can help you process feelings that cause pain or discomfort. I provide a safe space to identify the strengths that have brought you to this point in your life and help you learn how to use those strengths to work through some of the challenges. I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, feelings of low self-worth or just trying to help everyday life feel a little easier.

People with stressful lives, who have been trying their best to deal with anxiety, self esteem, relationship issues -- all reasons people contact me initially. You may have noticed feeling or behaving in ways that are self-defeating, or you are disappointed that you don't feel more authentic with others, or fully engaged in your life. Crises such as divorce or loss, challenges in parenting or work pressures can serve as catalysts for reevaluating the way we've been living. Psychotherapy offers a unique opportunity to discover what I believe is inherent in everyone: the ability to change and grow and heal.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
