Very rarely in our lives are we given the opportunity and the space to truly look at ourselves, where we have been, and the person we are looking to become. At Kate Giandonato & Associates, we create an environment where you can safely look at yourself, relationships, and potential barriers to achieving your goals. Our
relationship
-based training in Social Work + Child Development has given us the background to notice and work through the conflicting messages, thoughts and emotions present not only in the parent-child
relationship
, but in every
relationship
. We work with our clients to better understand and negotiate these most important relationships.

Reaching out for help can be difficult. It takes courage, vulnerability and hope to seek support and be open to seeing things from a new perspective. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, and family coping. I work with adolescents, adults, families and
couples
to help them find greater fulfillment from life and relationships. My therapeutic style is warm, empathetic, culturally sensitive, strength based and client centered. As a former medical social worker, I am experienced in helping families cope through the many emotional and practical challenges a medical diagnosis and treatment can bring.

Life can be stressful particularly in these unpredictable times. You may be finding that worries are hard to turn off during the day and also keep you up at night. Perhaps you are becoming irritable with your family, friends or coworkers. Or rather than feeling anxious you might be noticing that you are often tired. You might have less interest in attending the extended family party or going out with your
partner
. I can help you to get a handle on your worries, regain energy, and to feel more grounded and able to manage what comes your way.

Individuals coping with
relationship
stressors and changes in life circumstances (such as break-up, divorce, children leaving home, health, parents needing caregiving), anxiety, depression, self-esteem, trauma, grief and loss.
Life is all about relationships--beginning with the one you have with yourself. My goal is to provide a safe place for you to explore your underlying feelings leading to a better understanding and acceptance of who you are and who you can be. I will provide you a supportive
relationship
as you re-gain control of your life. Changes within often change relationships with others and that can be challenging, even frightening, yet rewarding. We will work together to strengthen emotional bonds with loved ones, cope with grief and loss, deal with trauma, and maintain a sense of inner balance.

Welcome! I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist providing individual and
couples
psychotherapy for late adolescents to older adults. My approach is rooted in creating a collaborative, compassionate, and safe environment to explore reasons for distress and practice ways to process, cope, and heal from them. My work is holistic and integrative, meaning that I draw from different theoretical approaches to tailor therapy to each person's unique needs. I aim to link current stressors with past events to provide insight and corrective emotional experiences while empowering clients to build on their innate strengths.

I work primarily with individuals but will see
couples
when both partners are committed to improving their own mental health by building a stronger
relationship
.
Our practice serves clients 18 and older. I am passionate about working with adults of all backgrounds and identities who are coping with symptoms of anxiety, depression, grief, difficulty adjusting to life's transitions, or navigating complex relationships with family members and others. I have a certificate in gerontology and enjoy working with older adults as much as working with younger and middle-aged clients. I believe individuals are the experts on our own lives . . . and that each of us can, at times, use a fresh perspective to help reexamine, and sometimes challenge, our old assumptions.

We are all human. However, each individual is unique in their life experiences, personal needs, and individual goals. Therapy creates a safe place to have the past meet the present in order to find a greater understanding of our lives. Self-exploration can help provide greater insight, purpose, and healing in order to live a more productive and healthy life.

Choosing therapy is a brave step to take, and after you take that step, I will walk with you. It is my priority to create a space where you feel comfortable and supported as you express yourself. I want to
partner
with you and learn about your specific needs so that I can understand your experience, without assumptions. I will provide empathy, education, and insight as we work together. I want to help you recognize your own strengths and build off of them as we create solid goals so that you can take active steps towards healing, change, and growth. I will work with you and your family to help you meet your individual needs.

If you’re struggling to cope with past traumas, I can help you identify how this is showing up in your present and offer the tools that will create the path to your desired future. Trauma impedes our natural ability as humans to be able to identify and reach goals, and connect and form relationships with others. I know that this can all be worked through with a positive therapeutic
relationship
and guidance to rediscovering the inner knowing you possess about what you truly need to thrive. My personal approach to therapy is what allows for others to connect with me- I am laid-back, direct, funny, caring, and non-judgement.

I work with adults, both individually and in
couples
.
Life is filled with transitions, both good and painful, and it is our attention to those transitions that help us build joy and fulfillment in our lives. I believe that therapy is about a good match between the therapist and the person seeking assistance and that this partnership forms the basis for a real opportunity for self knowledge and growth. In our work together I provide a thoughtful, caring and safe space to attend to the life issues that are most in the forefront for you. With focused attention to those issues, surprising and hopeful things begin to occur.

I work best with clients who hope to more effectively manage life's many stressors, cope with life transitions, or address concerns related to sexual health, anxiety or depression, pregnancy/postpartum/infertility, or
relationship
concerns. I am a dedicated life long learner, and consistently seek out trainings and professional growth opportunities to further deepen my knowledge, understanding, and tool kits for working with a wide range of clients. I am also a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) Knowledgable Therapist, and enjoy working with people with this trait.

Through more than 20 years of experience, I have worked extensively with individuals,
couples
and multi-generational families providing treatment for a wide range of conditions that affect mood, thinking, and behavior. I grew up in a large & humble home; learning and understanding the complexities of dealing with different types of personalities, sometimes in difficult circumstances at an early age. My goal is to see clients do amazing work in treatment by strengthening their coping skills, removing limiting beliefs, resolving conflicts, and lifestyle changes through a positive way of thinking, feeling, and behaving.

The client-therapist
relationship
is the single most important factor in successful therapy. Taking the time to build this rapport is a crucial step when I work with someone. I also believe therapy is a collaborative process. The client must feel empowered to lead their therapy process, while I can support and guide them to meet their goals. Ideal clients include those who genuinely want to identify areas of challenge in their life and make progress. At the end of therapy sessions, my goal is for my clients to feel better than when they walked into the session.

On the journey throughout the lifespan, we inevitably encounter challenges and obstacles along our way. My role as a psychologist is to help you cultivate awareness and compassion in the process of exploring your experience and your relationships with others, and facilitate your ability to harness your innate resources for growth. I work with people at all stages of the lifespan: in the beginning relational dance between parents and infants and throughout childhood, to adolescence when families help their children launch, with young adults navigating the world, with
couples
learning how to be intimate partners, when separation or divorce occurs, and throughout adulthood.

I support families,
couples
, and individuals under stress. I work with clients to uncover contexts and patterns of thoughts and behaviors that are causing distress, as well as formulate strategies that lead to visible change. Often, you as the client already know the "answers" but could use support in living those answers out. The end goal is growth; the client should be able to look back at our work together and see a difference.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
