As a child/ adolescent , individual, couple, and family therapist, I use a strengths-based and relational approach to identify the emotional and behavioral change that you want to see within your life.
If you’re struggling to cope with past traumas, I can help you identify how this is showing up in your present and offer the tools that will create the path to your desired future. Trauma impedes our natural ability as humans to be able to identify and reach goals, and connect and form relationships with others. I know that this can all be worked through with a positive therapeutic relationship and guidance to rediscovering the inner knowing you possess about what you truly need to thrive. My personal approach to therapy is what allows for others to connect with me- I am laid-back, direct, funny, caring, and non-judgement.

Do you consider family time a dreaded activity? Do you avoid going home because you know your child is acting out and on your last nerve, your teen is spending more time in their room and becoming quiet and withdrawn, and your partner is distant and unconcerned? With an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy and professional certification In Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, I possess specialized knowledge and training to understand the complex emotional life of children, adolescents, and families.
Sometimes children and adolescents feel sad, anxious, and overwhelmed by changing life situations, which may impact the development of their full academic, emotional and social potential. Sometimes a home can be a seat of conflict instead of refuge, because of stressful situations, such as divorce, financial difficulties, or stage-of-life changes. Understanding and working through the complex emotional issues confronting children, adolescents and their families is the focus of my training and my practice. Our goal in treatment is empowerment through strategies that build resilience, strength and hopeful perspectives.

Please reach out and see if I'd be a good match for your child or adolescent , or you.
Psychotherapist Irvin Yalom once said, "It's the relationship that heals." I am a firm believer that the relationship with my clients is key, and I wouldn't trade the therapeutic relationship for anything. My primary approach is rooted in deep empathy for my clients. Each client is deserving of and will receive my unconditionally positive view of them. I believe that each client is the best expert on themselves, and I allow them to take as much lead in session as is appropriate. I assume a collaborative view of therapy, actively working with my clients, be they child, adolescent , or adult.

I have years of experience and training in a range of areas including: adolescent peer challenges, substance abuse, school-related problems, parent support, young adult/college challenges, adult professionals, depression, anxiety and stress management among adults and adolescents, and adult life transitions (marriage, divorce, grief, retirement).
I am a psychotherapist and owner of VMA Psychotherapy practice. We believe that the most important trait in connecting with a therapist is comfort. As a whole, the clinicians at VMA Psychotherapy share the common mindset of developing authentic connections, utilizing innovative approaches, and asking the questions of what is each individual seeking in their lives and how can they get there. The foundations at VMA Psychotherapy involve psychodynamic theory, art/creativity and the development of one's own life philosophy. The pathway through adolescence and adulthood is much easier with a guide to offer support along the way.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
