I have interest and expertise in a variety of issues including: abuse or neglect; aggressive behavior; alcoholism; anger; anxiety; attention deficit; depressed mood; impulsivity; learning problems; life changes (divorce, illness, death); low self-esteem; new mother anxiety; pressure to be "perfect", relationship difficulties; separation; and sleep or toilet training.
I have worked with children, adults and families for more than 25 years. Using an integrative perspective, I apply a range of techniques, including those based in attachment, family systems, and cognitive behavioral theories. Prior to establishing my private practice, I worked in a variety of settings from inner-city neighborhoods of Washington DC, Baltimore and Chicago, to small towns in North Africa.Throughout my career, I have sought to demystify mental health and psychotherapy by actively involving my clients in the intake and therapy process.

As a former attorney, I understand firsthand the pressures of demanding careers and the complexities of major life and career transitions. You may appear successful on the outside while privately feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, disconnected, or like the weight of holding everything together has become too much. You’ve worked hard not only for yourself, but for the people who depend on you. But sometimes, the closer you get to the life you thought you wanted, the further away you feel from yourself—burned out, anxious, stuck, or simply tired of carrying so much alone.

Many of the individuals I work with are navigating life transitions, relationship challenges, unresolved emotional wounds, low self-worth, stress, or a lingering sense of dissatisfaction despite their best efforts. These experiences can leave you feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, or stuck in patterns that no longer support the life you want to live. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, confused, frustrated, discouraged, disappointed, lost, anxious, sad or angry, you are not alone. Most of us experience those feelings at some point in our lives. We care about the people we serve, and we believe every person is individual, authentic, and unique. We use evidence-based practice (EBP) methods for mental health to help children, pre-teens, teenagers, adults, couples, and families to live their best lives. We understand that therapy can seem scary and intimidating, though we know that finding the support you need is the key to starting the self- healing process.

I have years of training and experience working with survivors of trauma, mood issues, and Insomnia.
To understand each client, I begin by seeking out the strengths, abilities, and positive qualities that are present. Very often new clients are so used to thinking or hearing about their problems that they themselves seem to forget their own positive traits and attributes. Giving time and space for these elements to surface is helpful in many ways, including becoming a touchpoint of their own resources. I really enjoy helping foster resiliency among my clients, helping them recognize their capacities to cope, heal, and move beyond feeling stuck or powerless.

You wonder if you’ve lost the sharp, decisive version of yourself and can’t tell which came first: the anxiety or the insomnia
Clients come to me looking for a therapist who will work quickly, providing the direction and strategic ideas necessary for high-level functioning—because therapy should be a place where you feel heard, but more importantly, helped. Working on sleep issues can take as few as 6 sessions. After that, we can look into what else is bothering you.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists
How effective is treatment for insomnia?
The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?
There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?
There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?
Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
