I enjoy working with individuals who have been socially stigmatized due to their income level, legal history, teen pregnancy, religious preference, political affiliation, marital challenges, anger issues, etc.
The greatest work can be accomplished when a sense of community is built through therapeutic rapport. You are not alone – no matter what you have faced or are currently going through. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.

Before I was a therapist, I was an educator. For one course, my job was to teach first responders how to get important information from potentially traumatized witnesses/victims. I often wondered what I would do if I were permitted to see the crisis through. I believe it's my combination of a solid background in communication-which includes relationships, gender-speak, assertiveness and self-talk-and my education in Clinical Psychology and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor certification that provide for a well-balanced approach to individual counseling.

What I love most about being a therapist is seeing how positive changes in one person have a ripple effect in their family and community. We are truly all connected. The ability to acknowledge our struggles is the first step towards positive change. We are all capable of it. The majority of my career has been spent working with children, teenagers and young adults. The focus is usually on helping them manage issues related to depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma and low self-esteem. I enjoy getting to engage in family therapy, with the focus on improving communication and family dynamics. My work with adults focuses on similar concerns. I enjoy clients who come to therapy with a desire to understand themselves and change behaviors or thought patterns that are negatively impacting their lives.

Sometimes we lose our way in life or we are inhibited by past trauma/grief that can leave us overwhelmed and confused. I believe that you can't always choose your circumstances in life, but you can choose to overcome them. I also believe that you have the power to manage/control your thoughts and feelings instead of allowing them to control you. My goal is to help you work through those past or current issues, overcome those difficult circumstances in life, and to help you gain control over your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in order to help enhance your well-being.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
