Entering an intimate space with yourself is no easy task. But with the help of someone you trust, it makes the journey a bit easier to embrace. It is my belief that my job as a therapist is to help my clients connect the dots within their lives to enhance their mental health. This is done by unpacking, exploring and examining roadblocks from our past that are preventing us from being present in the present. This type of awareness helps to foster continual growth & grants access to understanding the story behind our behaviors.

Matthew Caston is an LCPC with several years of experience working with adolescents and adults with a variety of personal and clinical issues (mood, anxiety, behavioral, life transition, men's/ women's issues , relationships, trauma, etc.). He sees strong conviction in those who are forthcoming about what brings them to counseling. "For me, it shows a level of vulnerability that I've come to respect greatly. With such a large stigma surrounding mental health, I believe it's helpful to adapt to life's stressors; when we're vulnerable to them, learn how the environment may contribute, and what can we do to address the issues at hand."

Have you decided to become a mom? It can be daunting and at times difficult. During this pregnancy are you asking yourself questions like “why am I not glowing and happy?” Have you just become a new mom and feel disconnected and that no one understands? Do you have young children and constantly ask yourself “am I a good mom, what’s wrong with me or my child?” You are not alone. I felt these very same thoughts and so have many others. Transitioning to parenthood the first, second or even third time can be overwhelming and at times traumatic and that is where therapy can be helpful.

I take a trauma informed approach to treat men and women's issues , substance use disorders, adjustment concerns, and relational problems.
Life can sometimes be challenging and confusing. It's hard to ask for help and open up to someone that you don’t know. I believe in creating a safe place for you, where you can be open and honest, knowing that you will be respected and not judged. Creating a good clinician-client relationship is very important to the therapeutic process. I strongly believe in a collaborative approach to therapy where I can help you reach your goals. Then, together we can create a treatment plan that is tailored to each of your individual goals and needs. I will always encourage you to find your courage and the strength to reach your goals.

Perhaps you’re struggling with managing overwhelming feelings associated with pregnancy or navigating the minefields of postpartum. Or maybe you’re a woman that is feeling frustrated that penetrative sex feels painful and less enjoyable than you thought it would be. Either way, you're feeling disheartened that your life does not look like you imagined it would.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
