I work primarily with adolescents (ages 10-25), marriages, and men's issues . I currently supervise a team of therapists through Unbroken Family Counseling. I work within this team and, when necessary, work with schools, psychiatrists, and other community resources to help my clients. My ideal client is a teen who doesn't think he/she needs counseling, a marriage that is on the rocks, or a guy dealing with guy stuff (guys know what I'm talking about). If I cant help you I can help find someone who can.

Often we struggle with our thoughts or experiences, and that struggle gets in the way of us living a complete and fulfilling life. Learning new skills to better manage your depression, anxiety... whatever it is, can be very helpful, but treatment with me will also focus on accepting those parts of you for what they are. Instead of struggling and fighting against those thoughts, those feelings, I try to take a different approach.

For over 35 years I have worked with individuals, couples and families to solve problems, improve relationships and make life transitions. In this time I have learned to respect the uniqueness of each individual and family, as well as the abilities and courage they bring to the challenges they face. My approach is friendly, straightforward and solution-focused, but with appreciation for the variety and complexity of factors that may be involved with the issues that folks bring to therapy. I enjoy collaborating with clients to manage stress and modify the patterns of thinking, feeling and acting that concern them.

I am passionate about empowering people to express themselves in an open and honest manner. One main theme that drives what I do is the ongoing search for personal meaning and self-worth, something each of us has a natural right to seek out. I specialize in Play Therapy with children ages 3-11, particularly involving emotional regulation, anger management, behavioral issues, anxiety, and depression in children. Finally, I enjoy working with adolescents, teens, and young adults dealing with anxiety, depression, grieving, and other interpersonal issues.

Most men face challenges and carry emotional and mental burdens that are nothing like what their father or grandfathers experienced. One of the obstacles that may keep you from asking for help is the mistaken notion that to be a "real man" you must be able to handle your problems on your own. Unfortunately, that kind of isolation actually makes it harder to find satisfaction with yourself, your relationships and your career. None of us were ever intended to face our issues or challenges alone. To seek counsel and support is a sure sign of wisdom, courage and strength.

I believe in the innate dignity of all people, and the work I do as a counselor is to encourage and empower people to live up to their personal values and embrace a more abundant life. When I work with a client I meet them where they are, without judgment, and enter into a working relationship built on trust, empathy, vulnerability, and communication. I have a person-centered approach to therapy, meaning that I respect the people who walk into my office enough to trust them to make decisions for themselves. I believe change is inevitable, but also, often painful, but that doesn't mean we can't work to find hope and grace.

Life can sometimes be challenging and confusing. It's hard to ask for help and open up to someone that you don’t know. I believe in creating a safe place for you, where you can be open and honest, knowing that you will be respected and not judged. Creating a good clinician-client relationship is very important to the therapeutic process. I strongly believe in a collaborative approach to therapy where I can help you reach your goals. Then, together we can create a treatment plan that is tailored to each of your individual goals and needs. I will always encourage you to find your courage and the strength to reach your goals.

I believe that therapy should provide a space for individuals, couples, and families to encounter one another and themselves in new and different ways. To this end, I desire to help clients to take risks to acknowledge their pains, confront their limitations, and grieve their losses. Ultimately, I hope that through their therapeutic experiences clients find the freedom to be more fully themselves and to feel closer and more connected with the ones they love.

Starting this process can be overwhelming. Having to meet with a total stranger and talk about your life, I don't blame you for being hesitant! I make this process smoother for you by providing an easy-going and direct environment for you and offer up a non-judgmental space to have honest conversations. I work best with teens and adolescents but all are welcomed! My prior experience has been in higher education for 3.5 years working with adolescents navigating their college experience as well as an additional 4 years working with both adolescents and adults suffering from addiction.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
