I have worked with individuals, couples, and families as they've grieved the loss of a loved one, as divorce unraveled their sense of stability, or as unforeseen events and difficult transitions presented.
I believe it is a true privilege to be able to help others work through some of their most difficult times in life. I see each person as having unique needs, dreams, strengths and challenges, and I know that working collaboratively with a client requires that I first understand and honor who that individual is. People seek therapy for a variety of reasons, and it is often a daunting task to find a therapist who is the right fit. I would love the opportunity to talk with you, so that you may decide if I am the right counselor for you.

This has been such a hard season for many individuals and families navigating challenging issues with grief and loss . Most of my work has been providing support to children, adolescents, and adults during stressful experiences and transitions. My job allows me the privilege to witness the resilience and strength of individuals as they move through unexpected challenges. I believe it is important for all people to have a safe, non-judgmental, authentic space to feel validated and to help bring balance and healing to their life. I also work with therapists and medical providers who experience trauma and loss at work.

Whether you have been side-lined by grief over the death of someone (recent or long ago), divorce, or other loss , or if your present life is not as happy or fulfilling as you want it to be, I can help.
I empower people to let go of the pain, loneliness and isolation of grief so they can live more in the present and be themselves again. I also help individuals and couples look beyond the problems that bring them to therapy, and identify the changes they can make to restore happiness and harmony to their lives. Utilizing the education, support, and exploration that take place in therapy, clients leave with greater confidence and hope, and with new tools to address the challenges they face. I also offer articles and videos on my Website to inform and educate: See https://www.joedubowski.com/

My most recent work as a Bereavement Counselor in a Hospice setting has allowed me to put into practice my many years of loss and grief training.
I offer a calming and gentle approach to clients that enhances their comfort levels and allows for open discussion of problem areas. Together, we investigate the factors that cause and contribute to their issues. Together, we investigate coping skills and factors that will diminish symptoms and work toward resolution of these life issues. In the words of one client: "If what I have to say doesn't upset you, then maybe it isn't as bad as I feared." Mood disorders, autism spectrum disorders, relationship conflicts as well as loss and grief issues are among my treatment specialties.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
