Life can be challenging sometimes and you just need someone to listen and help you work things out. Maybe you're struggling with stress, anxiety, sadness or find yourself using substances or other distractions to escape. Maybe it's your child or teen who needs help. Perhaps you feel you and your partner, or you and your children just need a neutral party to help you understand and hear each other better.

The poet Rumi said, “The wound is the place where the Light enters you.” Emotional wounding is a very real part of human experience. It can happen as a result of trauma, loss , rejection, a serious health diagnosis or unwanted change. Like a physical wound, if left untreated it can become infected and lead to symptoms like anxiety and depression. My name is Mindy Tomlinson and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. I work with individuals to heal their wounds and enter the light where insight, clarity and acceptance lead to a renewed sense of normalcy and peace in their lives.

Utilizing an empowering and authentic approach I assist clients in identifying core issues and learn how to express their thoughts and feelings beneath the symptoms with which they struggle. In addition to treating anxiety, depression, body image, grief , relationship difficulties, I also specialize in working with trauma, dissociation, psychosis, and other difficult experiences.
In therapy, my approach is nondirective, genuine, warm, and empathic. I am nonjudgmental, accepting, and understanding. I follow my clients as they focus on whatever feels most important to them. My goal is to build a safe therapeutic relationship for clients to explore the depths of their most significant and often challenging life experiences. I listen and respond with empathic understanding of these experiences while my clients find meaning that is congruent with their whole self. Clients often feel deeply understood during this process, which is a profoundly healing experience.

I have worked with angry people, individuals with transgender and sexual orientation issues, and older adults dealing with loss .
My job, as I see it, is not to fix you, but to help you fix yourself. To do that, I help you find the tools you already have and remind you that - on some deep level - you already know how to use them. My approach is cognitive, because I believe the way we think about our lives helps create them.

Life isn't always in our control (and no, I'm not a fan of that either). In therapy, we can learn to manage the things within our control - so that we are better equipped to contend with life’s inevitable ups and downs. Whether you're experiencing a big transition, stress from everyday life, a personal loss , or chronic issues - we can work together to make things easier. I have experience working with individuals with a variety of concerns & mental/physical health issues. I strive to make everyone - of any body shape/size, sexuality, gender, race, religion, or disability - comfortable in the therapy room (and in their own skins).

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
