After the last few years, most of us need a safe space to feel heard and understood. My therapeutic style is gentle and deeply client-centered, creating an experience of rest for clients who find themselves feeling lost in the chaos of our world. I will use an eclectic blend of talk therapy, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, DBT and Internal Family Systems to assist you with discovering and achieving your goals for treatment. Because I have my own trauma history, I can connect well with those who find themselves still affected by past events that they wish would stop intruding on their present. I work with individual adults.

As a professional, and a parent I truly understand there is no greater joy than seeing your child happy and healthy. I also know there is no greater heartache than seeing your child unhappy. For adults: stress, anxiety, and depression can diminish time with families. For children: poor self-esteem, decreased confidence, bullying/ loss, academic struggles or a disability can impact friendships, family, and academics. I specialize in working with people who have experienced a twist in life that they were not expecting. I have 25 years of treating adults and children who want to reclaim control of their lives.

Brian has been in the addiction/mental health field since 1993. He has been described as practical, realistic, and down-to-earth therapist who is naturally inquisitive and goal oriented. He brings his warm and light hearted sense of humor to the therapy process, as he has learned that the best way to lead a person toward wellbeing and happiness is to make the psychotherapy process relaxed, enjoyable and non-judgmental. But when necessary, Brian has a serious side, as addictions are for many, can be a life or death problem.

We all start somewhere. And we all have progress to make. Our past and present experiences inform our future. Understanding our past helps us create a coherent narrative of who we are today. It sets us up for better success, both now and in the future. I enjoy working with clients who are looking to explore past and present relational dynamics, work through past traumas, find inner peace, or strengthen their connection with others. I value the opportunity to guide clients on their path toward self-exploration and I use evidence-based practices to tailor my approach to individual needs.

All children and parents deserve support and kindness. Parenting and childhood can feel really vulnerable. You and your child deserve a place where you feel safe and understood. With this foundation, kids can explore healthy and adaptive ways of being, cope with challenging feelings, develop self-esteem and strengthen relationships. And you can feel more confident as a parent during these vulnerable times.

Interpersonal Therapists

Is interpersonal therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found interpersonal therapy to be effective for life transitions including retirement, divorce, and job loss. Also, some studies have found it to be just as useful as medication and other therapy approaches. The benefits of interpersonal therapy can last long after treatment has been completed; the individual can use the tenets of this therapy throughout their life.

How long does interpersonal therapy take?

Interpersonal psychotherapy is normally time-limited and focuses on specific problems in the client’s everyday relationships. Treatment can be either one-on-one or take place in a group setting; it tends to last 12 to 16 weeks, depending on the individual client’s needs. If a new interpersonal problem arises in the future, the client may require additional therapy to address it specifically. The timeline and session schedule may vary depending on the client’s challenges as well as their progress. Treatment may conclude with wrap-up sessions to review the client’s accomplishments.

Is interpersonal therapy effective?

Research shows that interpersonal therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of conditions such as depression or anxiety. The approach may also offer a range of benefits that are hard to measure but valuable—including healthier relationships and improved feelings of self-worth. The therapist will give the client practical solutions that can be put into practice. The brief duration of this therapy also means that clients can see changes in their relationships fairly quickly.

What are the limitations of interpersonal therapy?

Interpersonal therapy may not effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as psychosis, chronic illness, or alcohol relapse. Because it is short-term in nature, it may not be the best approach for conditions that need to be tracked, though maintenance sessions are a viable approach under these circumstances.

Can interpersonal psychotherapy be done online?

Yes, interpersonal psychotherapy can be conducted effectively either in-person or online. A therapist with expertise in IPT will be able to adjust their techniques, such as role-playing, to better suit the online environment. Offering online IPT can make it more accessible for clients who have transportation difficulties; it also provides the ideal opportunity to explore challenges unique to digital relationships.
