I’m glad you’re thinking about therapy, it can be hard to take that first step. Many of us operate under the idea we should be able to figure it out on our own. But unfortunately that’s just not always true. We often build walls and create patterns just to survive. That’s the truth of it all, you’re a survivor because you’re here. My hope is to help my clients understand all parts of themselves and uncover what parts may be holding them back, while learning tools to help break these disruptive cycles. There are no bad parts, and you (or your
teen
) aren’t broken. I’d love to help, feel free to reach out whenever you’re ready.

We often seek therapy yearning for connection and understanding. My goal is to provide a safe space where we can work together as a team to help you process your experiences, validate the emotions attached to these experiences, and discover your own strengths and capacity for coping through life’s challenges. We as humans are inherently resilient even when things like shame, trauma, isolation, addiction, depression, and anxiety try to disconnect us from ourselves and others. We will work together to find compassion for yourself in restoring this connection.

Every person that comes to therapy has unique reasons for showing up. Some are bothered by constant intrusive worry thoughts; others are bogged down by intense sadness. Many have experienced events that have proven the world to be unsafe, unjust, and filled with pain. While the intentions for seeking therapy might all be different, almost everyone has the same general goal: to achieve a life worth living. It is my privilege and honor to assist you in figuring out what that looks like.

My style is direct and casual, balanced with non-judgment and respect for your autonomy to support your authentic exploration and work towards connection, change, and healing. I have extensive experience with adolescents/young adults (ages 14-30), including queer, trans and nonbinary folks; parents; and adults navigating the general challenges of being a modern human in 2022.

With over 15 years experience as a licensed psychologist, I think of the therapeutic relationship as a method for understanding the self. To that end, behavior patterns can be explored, internal experience can shift with the movement towards change. Perhaps you are caught in the same cycle and feeling frustrated. You may be adjusting to a life or career transition. Stuff from the past is triggering and you might not understand why you feel the way you do. We can explore and understand the meanings in a safe and creative way.

I assume you're here because you're struggling in some way, and that whatever you've been doing in your life to deal with your pain simply isn't working any longer. My clients usually find me through some kind of loss - a divorce or relationship upset, illness, or other transitional experience, often accompanied by difficult feelings and behaviors. For more than 15 years I've been working with individuals, couples, and families, helping them to get in touch with their feelings and emotions, related to these painful experiences.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
