You are important. You sometimes need to talk through and to work on issues. We all do! That is normal and I would be honored to listen and to help you figure out alternative approaches. You are in charge of the decisions you make.

If you are seeking support in living with ADHD, let's work together! I'm a mental health professional with lived experience with ADHD and would be honored to join you in building the environment and skills that you need. I am also a neurodiversity affirming provider, which means that I practice from the belief that the ADHD neurotype is a valuable expression of human diversity. Our goal won't be to "fix you" - you aren't broken! But when our environments and skillsets don't support our experiences, ADHD can be disabling, leading to frustrations at both work and home.

I have worked in the mental health field for more 20 years following a career as a junior and senior high teacher. I have experience with everyone from very young children to elderly individuals. I believe firmly in the individual's ability to change if they so desire, regardless of education level, socioeconomic status, or past challenges. I approach all people with an open mind and a non-judgmental attitude. Acceptance and kindness are important traits and ones I strive to show each and every person I meet, whether that is within my office or at the grocery store.

Stop waiting for Friday, for summer, for someone to fall in love with you for life. Happiness is achieved when you stop waiting for it and make the most of the moment you are in now. We are constantly being challenged by the stressors in our lives - our partners, children, parents, work, and so much more. Then add in predispositions to mental health issues, past trauma, intergenerational issues and it's no wonder we're struggling to cope with everything. It's hard to find a sense of peace and to feel confident to manage these stressors.

I see children, adolescents and adults for individual therapy and couples therapy. I utilize a client centered approach where I give unconditional positive regard to my clients in a non-judgmental therapeutic setting. I have seen clients meet their treatment goals and develop positive coping skills to effectively manage their distressing symptoms. The greatest gift of therapy is the therapeutic alliance between the therapist and the client that elicits change and allows the client to use the tools that they have learned to make lifelong gains.

My name is Susie Wilhelm and I am an LCSW located in Illinois. My approach to therapy is warm, empathetic, non-judgmental, and client-centered. I believe in the process of building rapport and trust during the beginning phases of therapy so that my clients feel comfortable before sharing their concerns or struggles. I let my clients take the lead during our sessions, and I take an empathetic and non-judgmental stance while I listen and support. I commonly use therapeutic interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT).

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
