Welcome! I'm experienced in helping individual clients and couples address the barriers to the meaningful life they deserve. Whether it's anxiety, stress, panic, depression, a relationship or other concerns, I collaborate with clients to gain more insight and tools to gain relief. Clients often struggle to wade through "the noise" of everyday life to find a path to meaning or contentment. Through the years of doing this job, clients have continually inspired me in showing people's capacity for change. I am level three Gottman method trained for couples and marriage counseling .

Maybe you are reading this because you want something to change in your life. It’s a daring step to reach out to a stranger and trust them. I know therapy can help. It has helped me in my life, and it has helped many of my clients over the years. I offer free consultations with clients before we begin because a good fit is important. Although I have worked in agencies, hospitals and group practices, I think some of my best training has come from navigating a 24 year marriage , raising kids, and launching them into adulthood. I enjoy helping people work through anxiety and depression and get their life back.

My work years ago with adolescents led naturally to working more closely with parents, who often struggle themselves during this turbulent time for their children. A third of my practice is with adolescents (anxiety, depression, academic underachievement, identity issues), another third with parents and couples/ marriage (with or without children), and the other third with individual adults (anxiety, depression, issues of generativity in personal and/or professional lives).

At DePaul, I taught Marriage and the Family and a course on Divorce.
With over thirty years of experience, I love working with couples and individuals who are in all seasons of the life cycle - from young adulthood to later life. I specialize in helping people resolve complicated relationship issues and interpersonal problems. "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results..." is a saying in 12 Step programs. If those words resonate with you, I will be glad to help you try to understand what your patterns are about and how to change them. I am especially sensitiveto understanding clients in their cultural and faith contexts.

People who seek my services as a psychotherapist often feel stressed, stuck, or even hopeless. These feelings can stem from difficulties in personal relationships (couple/ marital , parent/child, aging parents, boss), life transitions (parenthood, infertility, illness, career change), loss (of a loved one, employment), or self-destructive behaviors. By analyzing the dynamics of these challenges in a confidential environment, utilizing time-tested theories, those with whom I work are often able to relieve their stress, "move-on" with confidence, and even see a clear path when previously all was bleak.

Julia is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in the treatment of mental health in the context of neurodivergence.
As a therapist specializing in neurodivergence, Julia has encountered many parents, families, and kids all trying to find clinician that both “gets” the mental health disorder their child is facing while equally understanding autism spectrum disorder, chromosomal differences, ADHD, developmental differences, and the neurodivergence of their child’s mind. Julia saw the huge demands on parents, sought to understand the hopes they have for their children and the hopes children have for themselves. In doing so, she has become a partner with parents, kids and families to reduce the stress of the therapy experience.

I often work with young couples, older couples, and dual career couples who are surprised and in pain over the loss of intimacy and play in their relationship and who struggle to make their marriage a priority.
I specialize in couples counseling, family counseling, counseling with men, and premarital counseling. I help clients make meaning of their struggles, articulate their desires, and collaborate to reach their goals. I normalize and interpret conflict in terms of differences, identity, connection, and power issues. Intimacy and anger, stress and time constraints, are often the focus of our work together. As a marriage and family therapist, I work on communication, creating quality time and understanding unmet needs now and from the past.
The future feels uncertain and we are anxious and depressed from a sense of powerlessness. We have returned to being very busy yet feel lonely and disconnected from others. We rely more on partners/spouses to meet our needs. Our children are caught up on social media and we worry about their chances for happiness and success. How do we manage what feels overwhelming and outside our control? How do we find time to think? Therapy is a space to slow it down and make needed changes in life. I will help you quiet the racing thoughts and create a better understanding of who you are and what you want in your one precious, life.

If you are experiencing marriage or relationship challenges, a difficult divorced co-parenting situation, or stressful parenting issues, there are powerful skills, and simple shifts in thinking that can give you relief and help you find peace. I believe that the challenges we face are not failures; rather they are opportunities to grow and mature into ourselves. I specialize in relationship work, couples work, divorced co-parenting issues, family relationship work, emotions work (anger issues, anxiety and grief) and individual self-growth, including life transitions. Through my work with high-conflict divorced co-parenting, I have developed tolerance, patience, compassion and skill for working with difficult and challenging relationship dynamics.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
