Through my work with high-conflict divorced co-parenting, I have developed tolerance, patience, compassion and skill for working with difficult and challenging relationship dynamics.

Hi there! I’m Rachel (she/her) and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist . Trained in Integrative Systemic Therapy at Northwestern University, I am most passionate about working with couples and individuals (older teens, young adults, adults) presenting with various needs, concerns, and presentations. These include depression/anxiety, trauma, complex PTSD, attachment issues, codependency, life transitions, and relational conflict.

Life is complicated and seldom straightforward. We are often left facing challenges that are surprising and difficult to navigate. It may be a new role, a disappointment at work, a problem in a relationship, or some lasting echoes from the past that still show up, that causes us to feel anxious, angry, sad, confused and “stuck”. We try our best to manage by using coping strategies that turn out to be more problematic than helpful. We are then left thinking, what happened? Will I ever feel like my old self? Chicago Psychotherapy, established by Dr. Caroline Adelman in 2014, is a private therapy practice with offices in Chicago's Lincoln Park and downtown Evanston. Oftentimes, people find that they are still working with parts of themselves that are stuck in the past. Each person knows themself and their parts best, and, together, we use this knowledge to move forward.

Throughout life, we are faced with many challenges...some more severe than others, some harder to overcome, and some which we ignore for the moment. When we choose not to face our challenges, it can negatively impact our true being. My experience includes working with those struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, grief and loss, substance abuse, trauma, parent-child relationships, crisis intervention, just to name a few.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist , I am extensively trained to work with individuals of every age and stage of development, along with additional specialized training for couples and families. I apply a systemic perspective and strength-based and resilience approach with clients, while blending evidence-based theory into practice. I work with life stage transitions, marital satisfaction and intimacy issues, high conflict, anxiety, depression, divorced or remarried or blended families, anger management, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, multi-cultural communication, stress management, family of origin issues, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), trauma, spiritual development, and work/life balance.

I deeply enjoy challenging and deconstructing all flavors of shame and stigma. I work with clients to notice, give attention, and slow down when our culture encourages us to ignore, distract, and speed up. By thoughtfully exploring family patterns and our ways of being in relationship, we can come to intriguing conclusions about ourselves and others. I work with people ages 17+, and I see clients individually, as families, as sibling groups, and in all configurations of romantic relationships.

I have experience working with adults of all ages struggling with trauma, addiction, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, co-dependency, relationships, and life transition issues including young adulthood, marriage, pregnancy, postpartum, parenting, separation, divorce, and grief.

I assist individuals in setting personal goals and visions and working toward desired results and healthy life. Also, I work with couples who may need some guidance and support while navigating their relationships. My goal is for these couples to leave therapy feeling more connected and secure in their relationships. When working with families, I look at the family as a whole, and address transitions, divorce, trauma, grief, and marital/financial problem.

Dr. Rios works with a broad spectrum of clients and has experiences in working with clients with a range of problems including: depression, anxiety, trauma, school problems, and relationship difficulties. Dr. Rios specializes in individual, couples and family therapy with children, adolescents, and adults of diverse backgrounds. She enjoys learning and understanding the unique elements that all of her clients bring with them in therapy. Dr. Rios values her relationships with her clients and sees the therapy relationship as one of mutual respect and trust.
