I have a passion for providing
women
postpartum support and parent education.
Thank you for visiting here. I'm a therapist with over 25 years experience helping people create change in their lives. Sometimes the change occurs in learning how to manage mood disorders, like anxiety, panic or depression. Other times the change occurs in learning new skills to improve relationships as a partner, parent or employee.

We all go through adverse life experiences that can take a toll on our emotional well-being. The stress of the past can sometimes end up following us and continuing to drive how we feel and the decisions we make. However, these hardships that we go through do not have to end up hindering our functioning and stagnating our growth. I also specialize in depression, self-esteem, anxiety,
women
and cultural issues. I have expertise in working with individuals who have experienced physical, emotional and/or sexual trauma or neglect during their childhood.

Allison Joy Stephens
Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC
I have successfully worked with many different populations, including adults with substance abuse issues, individuals with developmental disabilities, children and adolescence with behavioral problems and
women
with a history of domestic violence.
If you can change your thoughts you can change your world. I believe that our day to day thoughts directly dictate our emotions and ultimately our decisions and actions. Whether it is childhood trauma, adult anxiety or postpartum depression, we can take captive every self-defeating thought and turn that negative narrative into a powerful and hopeful future. Regaining control over our thoughts and actions can provide such lasting peace and happiness. My focus is to thoroughly get to know my patients, my listening to and trying my best to understand their unique experiences, while working collaboratively toward agreed upon goals.

Depression is exhausting. It leaves you feeling overwhelmed and stuck. You've lost direction and motivation, or live inhibited by fears of what might go wrong. You are tired of the stress associated with work, school, family or other personal relationships; it has you feeling down. Many clients feel this way when they reach out to me. Most of the people I work with are
women
between 20 and 40, who are tired of not moving through their lives in the way they want to. They are ready to look honestly at their patterns of thought and behavior, in order to achieve the freedom and grounding that comes with insight and positive change.

Relationships are full of challenges. At times you may feel like your “stuck” in the same communication cycle or emotional patterns with your partner. You might also feel like you have lost a sense of self and struggle with understanding why. You keep trying to improve aspects of your relationship and self, but nothing appears to work. Exploring your feelings, seeking life satisfaction, and reestablishing connection in intimate relationships, may seem stressful, confusing and at times overwhelming. I have a passion for collaborating with individuals and couples in navigating through various life challenges.

Your romantic relationship just isn’t what it used to be. You keep trying to get it back on track but it only seems to be getting worse. You’re fighting more often and constantly feeling misunderstood. It feels like you can’t even go a few days without getting annoyed or mad at each other. At times you dread going home and find reasons to stay away. You’re having a hard time remembering the last time you went on a date, had fun together or maybe even had a normal conversation. At times you are doing everything you can just to make it through the week.

Coping with life's challenges can be difficult. Working with someone who is compassionate and knowledgeable can help to navigate unfamiliar territory. ways of communicating with and relating to each other.
Certified in EMDR, I also bring expertise to those who have undergone trauma, abuse or neglect,

Your relationship is unraveling before you. You never imagined things could get this bad or that you would ever deal with such painful issues. You’re feeling invalidated, misunderstood, confused, hurt, and angry on a regular basis. All you want is to be happy again. You find yourself doubting the relationship and yourself on a regular basis. You've even considered what it would be like if you weren't together anymore. Other times you want to do everything you can to fix the problems but your efforts just aren't getting you the long term results you want. Your head is constantly spinning. Things were supposed to be different.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
