Hello, I’m Sonya, a therapist who believes healing doesn’t have to feel heavy all the time. I bring an open mind and genuine curiosity to every session, because your story deserves to be heard without judgment. While we’ll dig deep into the challenges you’re facing, I also use humor to remind you that growth can be lighter. My approach is all about helping you discover your own resilience and power, even when it feels out of reach while giving you the tools that create the changes you want in your life. Together, we’ll build a path forward that feels authentic, balanced, and empowering. Warmest regards, Sonya

Experiencing trauma within relationships can deeply affect our sense of security and connection. Unresolved trauma can create discord and disconnect, manifesting as persistent tension, feelings of betrayal, or emotional withdrawal. You may find yourself caught in cycles of blame or misunderstanding, making it tough to find peace. Recognizing the impact of these experiences is crucial. By addressing them with compassion and insight, healing and reconciliation become possible, allowing for more genuine connections and stronger relationship bonds.

Nobody sees it. That is the thing nobody ever talks about. You show up. You take care of everyone. You say the right things at the right times, hold the family together, meet every expectation, and smile through the exhaustion. And somewhere in all of that, you disappeared. Not all at once. Slowly, over years, without anyone noticing. The version of you that had her own wants, her own voice, her own way of moving through a room, she got quieter and quieter until you stopped noticing she was gone. You are not broken. You are functioning. But functioning is not the same as living, and deep down, you already know the difference.

I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor with experience helping young adults, people experiencing depression, anxiety, self-esteem, or identity issues, and supporting the LGBTQ community.
You deserve to feel connected to yourself, have fulfilling relationships, and genuinely enjoy your life. Whether you can’t remember the last time you felt those things or they have recently begun to drift away – we can rediscover them together. As a therapist, I am here not to tell you how to think or feel, but to help you explore how you truly do think and feel. We will hold space to be curious about all your experiences, so you can understand and appreciate yourself as a whole person. We will take the time to learn about who you are, what shaped you into the person you are today, and what your hopes are for the future.

I offer guidance and support in self listening practice where we tune into your internal experiences together. We partner to identify concerns and barriers, tend to painful and vulnerable emotions, build and authentically experience reciprocal relationships, and connect to yourself in daily life. This is helpful for people who have been disconnected from their intuition and inherent worthiness by the stress of their lived experiences, mental health needs, and systemic oppression. I enjoy working with protectors who worry, intellectualize, compartmentalize, minimize/maximize, problem solve, dissociate, shut down, bully, and blame.

You may be holding it all together on the outside, while inside, something feels off. If you know something needs to change but you’re unsure where to start, you’re not alone. Many clients first come in questioning or doubting themselves, feeling stuck in ways that they can’t quite explain, or are trying to keep everything going while quietly burning out. Therapy offers you a moment for yourself, to get curious and begin to make sense of what’s happening beneath the surface.

I really applaud clients that are willing to acknowledge they are facing a challenge that needs serious and honest attention. Clients that can rise to the occasion and push beyond their "comfort zones" to collaborate with their therapist, build trust and establish a mutual positive rapport. Clients that are able to be a bit vulnerable if it means gaining some traction for success during our therapy sessions.

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming or uncertain. Anxiety can take hold, relationship patterns may repeat, and it can become difficult to feel grounded in yourself. You don’t have to navigate that alone. I offer a thoughtful and supportive space where you can slow down, feel genuinely seen, and begin to make sense of your experiences with compassion and curiosity. Together, we’ll explore the emotions, patterns, and life experiences that shape how you relate to yourself and others. Over time, we will recognize patterns that no longer serve you, and create more authentic and intentional ways of living.

Self Esteem Therapists
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
