I have worked in the field of mental health for over 2 decades, both as a clinician and in various leadership roles. One of my greatest passions is reducing the stigma and barriers that inhibit people from reaching out for help when they need it. The truth is, we all need help at some point- all of us. My role is to listen without judgement and provide support, tools and insights so that my clients can process their experience fully and move forward in life. I utilize a blend of cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness to improve coping skills leading to greater life satisfaction.
At any time in our lives, we may experience distance between where we are and where we'd like to be. Obstacles can sometimes stand in our way, and prevent us from achieving and living the life that we long for. I work with individuals and couples in a collaborative process to explore these obstacles, and to challenge old patterns and beliefs that may no longer be necessary, while finding new ways of thinking and living. With much compassion and understanding, I work with clients to facilitate healing and growth, grounded in a desire to empower others to achieve their goals, and to be brave, while deeply-rooted in hope.
While I am skilled in working with a wide variety of clients, I most enjoy working with children, teens and adults who struggle with authority figures and themselves. I enjoy helping clients learn to know they are loved and heard. They often feel like they do not have a voice and they rebel because it has been more successful then being respectful to authority figures. The goals for the client would be learning to manage and express their feelings while learning to be respectful to one self and then respectful to others. The child's parents would learn and use positive parenting skills to help instill child's goals.
People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Their reasons may range from mild relationship difficulties to more severe problems that affect their ability to work, love, and enjoy life. Although I use empirically-supported techniques, I do not believe in “cookie-cutter” approaches. In collaboration with my clients, I work to tailor interventions that are consistent with my clients’ goals and values. There is no "one size fits all" approach, but I draw most heavily on mindfulness-enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy. I teach people to see the connections between situations, thoughts, behaviors, and emotions.
All relationships have chaotic or lonely times where you may feel incapable of approaching each other. Couples need a place to turn when they don't know what to do or have no support system. I help couples stuck in conflict gridlock begin to reengage with each other. I specialize in working with couples who experience: high levels of conflict; inability to communicate; emotional & physical distance or disengagement; infidelity; transitioning to parenthood; infertility/pregnancy loss; difficulty overcoming family of origin or cultural differences; and difficulty making the decision to divorce or separate.
I focus my coaching on helping parents, who have a child or children struggling with a substance use disorder and/or a mental health condition. I help parents of adolescent and young adult children focus on what kind of help and support they need for themselves as they navigate the journey with their struggling child. Some of the issues I help parents with is getting calm, helping them develop a support network and a self-care practice, offering resources and education about substance use disorder and mental health conditions, and improving the communication and setting boundaries with their struggling child.
Am I the right therapist for you? My clients are relatively high functioning, but feeling stuck or facing common challenges involving relationships, life transitions or existential issues of meaning/purpose. I work best with motivated clients who are ready to do the hard work that's necessary for lasting change. I've witnessed awe-inspiring change in clients, which is what continues to motivate me, and I have seen how my 60+ years of life experience and hard-earned wisdom have helped my clients. I'm passionate about my work and approach it with a high level of professionalism, but I also don't hesitate to insert a bit of humor.
As a counselor, I welcome all clients by inviting them to create a partnership where we grow together, mend wounds and restore health. My focus is to use an open mind, acceptance, patience, collaboration, reflection, and humor to cultivate a deep understanding and a meaningful relationship. Experienced in working with children with disabilities, teens and adults, I continue to explore your strengths to build resilience and open the door to self-reflection, transformation and satisfaction.

I enjoy working with all my clients. I work with children, adolescents, and adults with a myriad of issues. I have a particular expertise and understanding working with trauma issues. I have 15 years of police experience that allows me to better understand the needs of the service professionals (police, fire, nurses, military, etc.) clients and their families and how best to help them in a compassionate and caring way. The needs of these individuals can be unique. From substance abuse and anger control to depression and suicidal ideation, the stressors of these individuals require an understanding and knowledge, which I have.
A lack of purpose, understanding, and knowledge of one's self can send ripples of negative events in one's life. So, learning, as well as empathizing with that uncertainty, is critical. The goals of change and experiencing are critical.
