My name is Maddy Hesslau and I offer individual counseling services primarily to teen girls and
women
. I know firsthand the courage it requires to reach out to a therapist. First, know that I am rooting for you in your healing process. Not only is reaching out to a therapist a courageous step but so is advocating for yourself and finding the best fit. The therapist-client relationship is one of the most significant effects to change. You or I may not be the best fit- however, I hope to hear your story and offer an idea of what the therapeutic process may look like in our counseling journey together.

However, I also work with
women
and men experiencing a variety of problems including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and life changes.
It is stressful to sit down with a stranger and work on solving your biggest problems, but a relaxed and non-hurried atmosphere helps. I'm a warm, engaging and compassionate therapist. I absolutely love my work, as I've been privileged to support so many people in their efforts to feel good again. I believe strongly in the resiliency of the human spirit; however, it is important that my clients take away real tools to manage life's stressors. I'm trained in the Brainspotting treatment method, a powerful and efficient therapy that helps improve symptoms of trauma and/or other neurophysiological challenges.

“Healing takes time and asking for help is a courageous step” (Mariska Hargitay). You don’t have to heal alone, engaging in therapy for you and your child is the first step in helping you both heal. Therapy can be a tool used to help you and your child learn skills to make the world feel safer and happier. Please allow me to help you and your child live a more peaceful and calm life. I specialize in working with children and teens who have ASD, sensory processing issues, behavioral issues, anxiety, and ADHD. I also involve parents in the therapy process, as parents play a vital role in helping their children grow.

Life is hard but harder when we deny that fact. We get "stuck", unmotivated, we give up. My practice is "real", it's comfortable and down to earth. It is a safe place free from judgement or criticism. You will be heard and validated and in that there will be growth and change You will find freedom from whatever is keeping you from being the person you want to be, from whatever is keeping you from experiencing the fullness of life. It's all about you. Let's get you out of your head and into living. If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” -Maya Angelo

Been there, done that. Scrolling on...If I asked you to list 5-10 ways to decrease anxiety, improve your relationships, or reach your goals, I bet you could think of at least a few examples fairly quickly. Maybe, you've already tried those strategies yourself. Thankfully, Mental Health strategies and theories are not in short supply. However, just because you might know what you're "supposed to do" to feel better, change your thought patterns, or improve your family dynamics doesn't mean it's easy to actually do it. Humans are endlessly adaptive, yet persistently stubborn. We just need to figure out what works for you.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
