Hi, I’m Shirley! I see you—anxious people-pleasers who are juggling too many responsibilities and roles. You’re often the peacemaker or problem-solver in your family, and while that’s a strength, it can also leave you feeling drained. You put your needs last, and with no time or space for yourself, burnout, irritability, and feeling lost become familiar. You want to find calm and balance so that you don’t pass on these same struggles to the next generation—whether you have children now or plan to start a family.

Insecurities, anxieties, feelings of grief, & the traumas of our past are common human experiences, however, these feelings can distance us from the life we want and deserve. My goal is to introduce you to the best parts of yourself and find ways to get closer to where you want to be. I strive to point out and help you build on the strengths you already have while keeping your values at the forefront. My ideal clients are curious, introspective, motivated, and ready to commit to the work, and need an extra push from yours truly (me). If this does not sound like you, then we may not be a good fit.

As a Latino therapist, my passion lies in helping teens and adults, specifically individuals in the Latinx and LGBTQ+ community who have been struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, or religious trauma. Right now it may feel exhausting to carry unrealistic expectations, to suppress emotions to maintain the peace, or to remain stuck in survival mode. For so long, you have been holding it together while no one knows how close you are to falling apart. My goal is to create a space where you are fully seen, heard, and accepted while gaining deeper insight into how your past experiences influence your present.

You deserve to feel connected to yourself, have fulfilling relationships, and genuinely enjoy your life. Whether you can’t remember the last time you felt those things or they have recently begun to drift away – we can rediscover them together. As a therapist, I am here not to tell you how to think or feel, but to help you explore how you truly do think and feel. We will hold space to be curious about all your experiences, so you can understand and appreciate yourself as a whole person. We will take the time to learn about who you are, what shaped you into the person you are today, and what your hopes are for the future.

Self Esteem Therapists

When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?

When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?

Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?

Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
