Psychoanalytic Therapists in Chicago, IL

I also have training in the treatment of trauma and have been introduced to psychoanalytic thought through the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute's Exploring Psychoanalysis Program.
I care deeply about helping adults with anxiety, grief and major life change learn to cope with genuine compassion and reverence for the web of their life experiences. I work with people who feel trapped by self doubt, endless thought spirals, unfulfilling relationships, or patterns that are hard to break. We are not meant to go through any of these things alone. I help to re-ground, create new meaning in life, and enhance emotional intelligence. I enjoy working with women across the lifespan, those going through major life transitions, concerns related to pregnancy/postpartum, new grads, and those who have lost someone they love.

I provide psychoanalytic treatment for people across the lifespan.
I am currently training to be a psychoanalyst and welcome inquiries for psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis involves more frequent meetings which can provide an immersive experience for illuminating the origins of emotional difficulties, reworking relationship dynamics, and thinking about ones life is ways that promote expansion.

In my practice I draw from contemporary psychoanalytic and relational theories.
Whatever has brought you to seek help at this time, you are taking a courageous step forward. In our initial meetings, I will hold an open space for you to begin to tell your unique story of your self, relationships, family, culture, strengths and struggles. You can expect me to listen deeply to begin to learn about you and your reasons for seeking therapy. We all have some aspects about ourselves that we don’t fully understand or may not have words for yet. Psychotherapy can create a place where you can discover some of these unspoken thoughts and feelings, and in turn, powerful transformation can occur.

My preferred treatment approach is psychoanalytic and trauma informed.
I enjoy working primarily with individuals who have a history of interpersonal violence. I especially feel honored to journey with those navigating their relationships as they work through their trauma history. I recognize how one's racial, cultural, and faith background impact recovery and welcome integrating these components in therapy. I also take time to explore how childhood experiences shape the individual and current relationships. My hope is that, through our time together, you will gain greater insight into yourself, which will contribute to your flourishing and the flourishing of your relationships.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy facilitates healing through a therapeutic relationship that is safe, trusting, and collaborative.
The therapeutic space is one in which you can speak freely, without fear of judgment. Together, we will identify and give meaning to experiences that have affected you, even those that lie outside your immediate awareness.

In psychoanalytic therapy, this experience is transformative.
A central idea of psychoanalysis is that through the challenging task of trying to say whatever comes to mind, people gradually become acquainted with parts of themselves—with ways of thinking, feeling, and being—that are ordinarily unconscious. I offer patients a space for uncensored expression, where they are free to say whatever comes to mind.

Recently (2022) I completed psychoanalytic training at the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis where I am also clinical adjunct faculty and a current board member.
Psychotherapy and psychoanalysis should be an investment in creating a life. It should be a goal-driven partnership between the two people in the room. In the therapeutic process we find new goals and have to reassess priorities, shifting back and forth between concrete issues and more abstract concerns with the continued effort of reducing emotional pain and finding a way to live in the world. If you have a question, please email me at zak(at)zakmucha.com or call 773-273-0474 and we can plan for a meeting over the phone or in person. I will be glad to answer any questions regarding fees and insurance.

My approach blends psychoanalytic therapy (exploring deep-rooted patterns), EMDR therapy (reprocessing past experiences), and mind-body techniques to help regulate anxiety.
“Do I live my life according to my own deepest truths, or in order to fulfill someone else’s expectations? How much of what I have believed and done is actually my own and how much has been in service to a self-image I originally created in the belief it was necessary to please my parents?” ― Gabor Maté.
No matter how much you accomplish, it never feels like enough. Your mind races at night, replaying conversations, worrying about the future, or second-guessing your decisions. You’re exhausted.
I specialize in helping high-achieving professionals like you gain clarity, build confidence, and create lasting change.

I draw from various theories/interventions ( psychoanalytic, relational, client-centered, CBT, etc.).
We are shaped by our histories, relationships, and resources, but don't have to be limited by them. Our experiences sometimes leave us hopeful and nourished and other times leave us stuck, depleted, anxious, sad, confused, overwhelmed. I help my clients draw on their inner resilience to confront, manage and transcend challenges, freeing them to live more authentic and fulfilling lives. My work is trauma-informed. My process is collaborative and interactive. I approach each therapy encounter with an open mind, recognizing that you are the expert in your life and know what works and what you need from therapy.

I will help you to learn about how your eating disorder developed, what triggers you, and how to cope through life’s stressors. I believe that full recovery is possible, and I'm here to guide you in this journey.
