Hello! I've been a practicing clinical counselor for over 27 years after serving in the U.S. Army Chaplain Corp. I take an eclectic approach to therapy using techniques found in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Choice Theory, Existential Therapy, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I focus on the areas of anger management, anxiety, depression, job stress, and panic attacks. I received my clinical training at Illinois State University in Human Services Counseling and Lincoln Christian Seminary in Pastoral Counseling.

My style is interactive and collaborative. I bring my knowledge of psychological theories, and you bring information about your experiences, perceptions, and your understanding of your current situation. Together we will work on developing a common understanding of the key issue that brings you to therapy, and together we will set goals for our work together. I am drawn to theories that aim to understand how we experience our world in the here and now, and how we understand ourselves in relation to the important people in our lives.

Life is ever changing, and with change can bring a plethora of other emotions including stress, depression and anxiety. It takes strength to seek help when we are feeling most vulnerable. I aim to create a safe, warm, and supportive connection with another person and use that connection to cultivate change. I’d like to help you become empowered to accomplish your own goals and to take control of your life. All transitions are difficult, whether it is anticipated or unexpected change. As adults, we have many responsibilities to uphold. This can include career, relationships, and family, emotional and physical health.

During this time of increased stress, counseling is often a valuable source of support. Providing assistance to children, teens, and adults with special needs and their families is the focus of my practice. Beginning as a learning disabilities teacher, and then transitioning to clinical psychology, I have over 25 years of experience. My practice combines a solid foundation in traditional psychotherapy with specialized interventions for individuals with special needs. Whether seeking support for yourself or guidance for a loved one, together we can help you find solutions.

As your therapist, I can help you find inner peace, stability, and joy in life if you are someone who struggles with anxiety, depression, identity formation, stress, or life transitions, forming connections in school, relationships, or work. Life can be hard when we encounter feelings and situations that prevent us from growing. Making the changes you want to incorporate into your life can be difficult. Therapy is a process. You have taken the most difficult first step in your journey so far; you have decided to ask for guidance.

You spend a substantial amount of time pretending to have it all figured out, but inside you struggle with feeling flawed, unusual, or broken, and you imagine that no one around you can really understand what this feels like. It might look like despising the body that you exist in and feeling like your only option is to change it. It might look like feeling like your insecurities are crushing you, and impacting how you interact with others. It might look like struggling after hearing your partner had an affair, not knowing how you will emotionally recover. You want a therapist who can hold your hand and remind you of your own light.

Becoming a parent is one of the most transformative journeys a person will experience. For some it can be a time for self awareness, reflection and deepening of relationships. For others it may be a time filled with anxiety, fear and distress. After baby arrives the family will be in a time of transition, navigating new roles and how to care for and attune to baby. I am passionate about supporting parents and their babies to navigate the crucial time period.

Hi, I’m Stephanie! I am a bilingual, bicultural therapist and second-generation Mexican-American. Growing up, I observed the stigmatized view of mental health issues and therapy. These moments inspired me to pursue a career in mental health, to create a safe space for voices to be heard, to break barriers and promote moments of vulnerability, and healing. I not only empathize with my clients but I am also committed to compassion therapy and mental health practices through healing and education.

It’s hard to put yourself out there…To allow yourself to be vulnerable…To really connect with others. When you do, you practically tie yourself up in knots replaying what you said – what you did. You make promises to yourself that somehow next time you’ll do things differently…that you’ll feel different….that you won’t be full of regret and shame. Regardless of whether you spend most of your time at school or work, Chicago can be a hard place to get your footing. Looking around you, everyone seems connected. Everyone seems confident. When will you stop second-guessing yourself?

How can I find a therapist in Chicago?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
