I've worked with men for over 25 years in individual and group settings - journeying with them to deepen self-awareness, develop authenticity, intention and purpose.
I offer individual, couples counseling and career counseling for people of all ages. As a professional businessman and now a psychotherapist, I bring life experience to therapy that gives me practical and insightful perspective on the challenges people face at home, the workplace and in their relationships. I enjoy working with couples and have extended training in the Gottman Therapy method. Couples issues can rack relationships especially those struggling fidelity and trauma issues. I am keenly aware of each of these and have worked with these tough issues as a therapist and husband.

I also want to make space specifically for men in individual and couples counseling because it can be challenging for men to ask for support and be vulnerable with their emotions.
I tailor my therapeutic approach to each individual but always start with a foundation of respect and understanding. You deserve a space where you can be heard without being judged and supported in the growth you choose. I provide trauma-informed, person-centered, and experiential care to help you move toward your desired life.

I specialize in male performance struggles, reigniting intimacy in a long term relationship, low desire, couples conflict, exploring fantasy and fetish, and dating (monogamy or non-monogamy).
I take a direct no-nonsense approach to what’s getting in the way of the sex life and relationship you desire. Whether you're struggling to "perform", your relationship dynamic keeps returning to the same problem, or you've lost the spark, it's never to late to start again. I provide a non-judgmental way for you to unfold back into feeling yourself. I choose to be a coach despite training as a therapist because it allows me more flexibility in treatment modality. In addition, I teach sex and relationship workshops to therapists and have multiple credentials and years of training in human sexuality and couples therapy.

With that being said, I was also born into a society that often refuses to accept the necessity of therapy, especially for men and people of color.
In 20 years of being in this field, I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. I have worked: intensive outpatient, high acuity inpatient, in Department of Corrections, and with DCFS. This blend of experiences has helped me form an approach that I believe benefits everyone regardless of their situation.

I am committed to destigmatizing mental healthcare for men of color as well as combating systems of oppression.
Seeking support is not often easy, and in engaging with therapy you have taken a very important step. I believe that there is no single therapeutic method that works for all people, and I instead look forward to meeting you where you are, building a trusting relationship, and collaborating with you on your goals while we create a personalized path towards empowering you and reducing your suffering. In walking this path together, we can work towards a better understanding of your Self, including your joys, sorrows, challenges, and strengths, as well as how you navigate the world.

Therapy can often be an intimidating space for people, so as a cis-Black male therapist, my theoretical orientation/approach to therapy is from a liberation and social justice lens, working through an anti-oppressive framework, which is trauma-informed, to make clients feel a sense of belonging while working with me.
I value holding space when needed and helping my clients work toward the social and emotional goals they have set. It is of great importance to advocate for my clients when they need advocating, whether in sessions or out of sessions through social activism, advocation in school or job settings, or empowering them to advocate for themselves.

My clients are men, women and couples, who are intelligent and very high functioning yet find themselves struggling with something, or perhaps just have a sense that they are needing something more.
I have particular expertise working with men and couples. The inner strivings of men are easily thwarted by external pressures and expectations often leaving a void needing to be filled. And couples often get stuck in patterns that leave them feeling alone and frustrated. Couples therapy can help you make sense of these patterns making change possible.

I also encourage men in particular to explore and challenge their concepts of masculinity in a healthy, positive light.
My preferred approach to counseling is person-centered while using a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness techniques. With couples, I apply the Gottman method and emotional focused therapy. Your therapy is always your space - I always keep in mind other modalities to adapt and adjust to your needs.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
