Hoarding Therapists in Chicago, IL
I became a therapist to help people and challenge them to become better versions of themselves. My goal is not to terrify you with change but to help you acknowledge and embrace discomfort, pursuing your best self. I developed an interest in OCD after working with individuals in private practice and community mental health who managed their OCD through previous treatments. Realizing there were other concerns in their lifelong pursuit of managing OCD drew me to NOCD. At NOCD, my team and I specialize in providing evidence-based treatment for OCD. Our deep understanding of its nuances allows us to properly diagnose and treat it.

I have extensive training working with individuals who struggle with a range of anxiety symptoms, and diagnoses especially trauma. In my years of practice, I have noticed that many clients lack trust in themselves and the ability to find a positive sense of self. People just want to understand themselves and become more comfortable with how they handle daily life stressors and others. To achieve this goal individuals need support with recognizing triggers and utilizing appropriate coping skills to reduce the negative responses to those triggers.

Maybe it’s drinking, avoiding, overthinking , or just running on autopilot. You keep telling yourself you’re fine, but deep down, you know you’re not living the life you want. Change doesn’t have to start with judgment. It starts with noticing — and choosing something different. I’m a licensed therapist and Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor, along with Contextual DBT Psychotherapist, who helps adults find steadier ground—whether that means cutting back, staying sober, or learning healthier ways to handle stress, anger, or sadness.

Hoarding Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.
How long does therapy for hoarding take?
Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.
Are there medications for hoarding?
The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.
Can hoarding come back after treatment?
Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
