My area of specialty and research is loss and mourning .
Therapy is an opportunity for personal development in a safe, supportive, and sometimes challenging environment. My primary method of treatment is in-depth exploration aimed at getting to know yourself and the ways you operate to give you greater choice in life . The relationship between therapist and patient is central to this approach.

I want to work with individuals who are struggling with anxiety, depression, grief , self-esteem, body image, chronic illnesses, stress, life changes, and life transitions.
Asking for help can be hard, but therapy can help you find yourself, and learn how to cope with life. I believe that it is essential to develop trust between the therapist and client, and that the therapist should provide a safe space for each client. My goal as a therapist is to provide you with a safe space where you can feel comfortable enough to open up and share your story, and in the process find who you are.

Everyone deserves support. Especially when life’s stresses overwhelm our ability to cope. Perhaps you are going through a time of change or are grieving a loss . Maybe you are struggling with feelings of anxiety or depression. Or the effects of trauma. Maybe you are simply feeling stuck in patterns that keep you mentally and physically in places you no longer want to be in. You are not alone and you can feel better. I believe that human beings have an innate resiliency and that anyone can develop the skills and courage necessary to change.

Feelings of depression and anxiety, or family and work conflicts can become overwhelming. Talking about your thoughts, feelings, dreams and experiences during the therapy hour helps relieve emotional suffering and increases your capacity to tolerate and manage difficult feelings such as anger, panic, grief and a sense of isolation.

Hello! My name is Grace Hicks and I received my masters in Professional Counseling from Northwestern University. My therapeutic approach is person-centered, strengths-based, and psychodynamic at its core. In other words, I do my very best to create a safe, comfortable, and personalized space to dig deep and gain personal insight (ie exploring history, relationship patterns, defense mechanisms, etc) while also making daily life easier (ie gaining coping strategies, self care techniques, etc). My approach is also trauma-informed, allowing for a secure environment to navigate big T and little t traumas.

Are you having a difficult time coping with the challenges of a recent loss or medical diagnosis? You may feel like you’re no longer yourself, having a hard time even completing the “normal” day-to-day responsibilities on your plate. Or perhaps you’re finding yourself turning to substances such as drugs or alcohol to help cope, but are becoming concerned about the impacts of this on you and your relationships. You’re looking for support from someone who won’t judge you, but will instead meet you right where you are and truly see, empathize with, and understand you.

The first is a grief and loss group designed to assist individuals who have lost a loved one.
We often find ourselves unable to move forward due to the enormity of the situations that are presented to us. We may feel stuck, tired, and at times, hopeless. So we armour ourselves to face the world. This armouring occurs in the form of addictions such as overeating; using drugs and alcohol; isolating and repeating patterns of toxic relationships. As a result our hearts become numb. We move through life with an armored exterior, fearful of experiencing our feelings and emotions. By creating a safe environment, I help unlock and release pain.

I also work with adults struggling with new transitions, grief , and a variety of other issues that we face as humans.
Choosing a therapist from a few lines can be difficult. For me, the most important part of therapy is a connection with your therapist. I offer complimentary consultations over the phone or in the office, It takes off some of the pressure and helps you decide if it is something you want to pursue. Many of us are intimidated by the idea of an hour spent talking about ourselves. A famous therapist said it best: "One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful."

Relationships are hard work. Sometimes we need help processing emotions and allowing our wounds to heal. Therapy can help unpack years of sweeping things under the rug, or simply equip you with skills to have more fulfilling relationships. In addition to couples therapy, I enjoy working with individual women dealing with transitional issues, anxiety & depression, and self improvement. I have a clinical interest in conflict resolution, parenting, grief & loss , infertility, and long term illness. I also have experience in corporate settings, providing therapy after workplace trauma. See more at- www.amandaatkinschicago.com.

My clinical interests include working with individuals and couples who have a history of depression, anxiety, grief and loss , life transitions, relationship concerns, infertility, and pregnancy loss .
Healing is an imperfect process, but it is in that imperfection that we find real opportunity for growth, connection, and change. As a therapist, I strive to create these opportunities for clients as I believe we find strength and hope when we are true to ourselves. When we learn to sit with discomfort and difficult emotions, we can gain new perspectives and insights towards making lasting change. I use a relational, authentic approach to create a warm, safe environment for clients. I believe therapy should be collaborative, and I work to provide clients with the space to share their stories.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
