I specialize in treating addictions to drugs, alcohol, and behaviors such as gambling , sex, Internet, and eating. I also address underlying issues such as anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. I work with adults of all ages individually as well as in groups. My approach to therapy is an interpersonal, client-centered approach. In other words, the client's own treatment goals are of central importance. While issues that initially bring the client into treatment tend to be the primary area of focus, the therapeutic relationship that develops with me is available to be used toward the client's therapeutic goals.

As A Certified Rehabilitation Counselor & Licensed ClinicalProfessional Counselor I have provided various forms of counseling including Family, Individual, Group, Substance Abuse, Mental Health, DUI, Vocational, and Gambling to both adults and youth populations.
My beliefs are clients hold the keys to their own healing and addressing the trauma in their lives. You have to be the driving force and navigator behind the pursuit of a healthy mind, body, and spirit. The act of being heard and understood is healing in-and-of itself, but an outside view, to guide or push us down the path of self-enlightenment and self-healing, helps. I understand the idea & process of gaining self-awareness via counseling can seem overwhelming and intimidating, but I believe it's actually a safe opportunity for personal growth, development, and achievement.

Drinking, using substances, gambling , self harm (cutting, burning, more).
My name is Matthew Cramer and I'm a psychotherapist and addictions counselor. If you're considering therapy but aren't quite sure, or aren't entirely comfortable opening up to a stranger, then you've come to the right place! Most people who see me have little to no experience with therapists or therapy. Many are uncomfortable asking for help, believing it is a sign of "weakness." Others come from families where "staying strong," and keeping "personal business" in the family was the norm. Whatever their story, they are able to open up to me.

Have you noticed changes in your stress level or how you deal with stress in your life? You may feel like you need to hide certain parts of yourself from your friends or family to avoid conflict or fit in. Maybe it’s coming out as drinking more often or having more drinks when you do. Are you binging on food, not eating for days at time or barely eating anything when you do eat? You could be turning to, or relying on other behaviors or substances. Or you may be in recovery but other parts of your life continue to feel unmanageable, frustrating, or leaving you feeling trapped.

Life’s challenges happen suddenly. Without warning it feels like you can’t navigate through with confidence and calm. Instead, you are plagued with worry, hesitation, anxiety, and depression. At times, life feels like a ticking time bomb, and you are desperately searching for an effective means to diffuse it. But your coping skills aren’t working well enough, or maybe they weren’t that healthy in the first place. How are you supposed to get comfortable with the challenges you are experiencing, let alone feel you are responding in a healthy way, when everything around you – maybe even your person – can be so unpredictable?

Gambling Therapists
A compulsive gambler or a pathological gambler is someone who is unable to resist his or her impulses to gamble. The urge to gamble becomes so great that tension can only be relieved by more gambling.

There is a very fine line between problem gambling or Chicago gambling addiction and gambling too much. The critical sign of problem gambling is often hidden from awareness, with denial. Many gamblers in Chicago typically do not know they have a problem. Admitting you have a problem, or may have a problem, is the first step to recovery.

Treatment options include individual and group psychotherapy, and self-help support groups such as Gamblers Anonymous (a 12-step program for gamblers). Abstinence principles that apply to other types of addiction are also relevant in the treatment of compulsive gambling behavior in Chicago.

Recently, medications such as antidepressants, opioid antagonists, and mood stabilizers have been shown to be beneficial in combination with gambling treatment by a Chicago gambling therapist or gambling therapists in Chicago or those experienced with gambling behaviors in Chicago.
