I've been practicing psychotherapy for over 20 years, working with adults from all walks of life who may be struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, relationship and
family
problems, vocational difficulties, and/or simply finding their way in life in difficult times. I love my work and find it an honor to be a part of someone's passage towards greater insight, stability and flourishing. I received my PhD from the University of Chicago and trained at the Center for Religion & Psychotherapy, where I have been the Director of Education as well as a faculty and staff person.

I have more than 30 years of experience, including individual, couples,
family
counseling, therapy, critical incidence stress debriefing, substance addiction assessment, and counseling.
I am of the thought that we come into the world a blank slate upon which our experiences are written. What is written is sometimes harmful and may manifest as traumas, abandonment, neglect, etc. Those environmental messages often become unresolved emotional issues carried through life and into relationships. I go beyond the presenting symptoms to identify the root problems. I share my clinical impressions and propose an individualized plan. My treatment approach is generally cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Psychodynamic theory focuses on "
family
of origin" issues, and cognitive-behavioral theory examines ones "core beliefs.
I seek to set my clients at ease in a comfortable setting so that they can tell their story in a nurturing and non-judgmental setting. Only then can we begin to focus on what they want to accomplish: setting realistic goals for both personal and professional success. I believe that this is done best with a sense of humor, as laughter is the best medicine! I show my clients that therapy can be as fun and as productive as they want it to be, where your thoughts and feelings are taken very seriously, and where what you put in is what you get out!

Working with children, adolescents, young adults, and families involves a collaborative process involving all of the individuals who help a child develop, including relatives, school staff, pediatricians, and other therapists. It also involves creating a positive, upbeat, and energetic setting to foster growth and development. Utilizing techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT),
Family
Systems therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), including mindfulness, my treatment paradigm involves evidence-based practices for a wide range of behavioral and emotional issues. I believe therapy should be proactive and not reactive, and that it must focus on strengths and not just weaknesses.

Therapy is the practice of finding opportunities for growth, while identifying the circumstances we can alter and finding peace with those we cannot. I use a systemic approach to help clients integrate their past experiences and relationships with where they are currently, in order to help them move forward with greater intention and well-being. This can be done through verbal expression, creative arts, play, movement, and writing. My approach is compassionate, curious, creative, affirming, and strength-based. I prioritize the therapist-client relationship in order to foster trust and safety, and help support change.

"We fear things in proportion to our ignorance of them." - Christian Nevell Bovee. My unique approach begins with the focus of increasing my client's knowledge of the mind and brain. Given that our brains are built to change in response to experience, there is a new optimism regarding the brain's ability to remain flexible and to benefit from enriching environments throughout life. Motherhood is a long process with a lot of twists and turns. Here we provide counseling to women of color who are navigating the demands of motherhood. Many moms say they have a hard time with work-life balance--they can't seem to find the right formula. Being a mother is hard, but there are ways you can learn to prioritize yourself and still give your
family
the love and care they need. It is important for mothers to fill their cups, so they can be their best selves for their children and partners. Moms that engage in regular self-care and learn how to identify their stressors.

"You suppose you are the trouble, but you are really the cure. You suppose that you are the lock on the door, but you are the key that opens it." These words of Rumi beautifully describe my therapeutic approach. Whether you are challenged by depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship problems, life transitions or issues related to trauma my approach lies in tapping the inherent wisdom and deep intuition that is within you. Even if you doubt that it exists; together we can uncover this wisdom to help you face challenges and create a fuller, more authentic, and meaningful life.

At Forest Path Therapy, we will walk with you on your journey and support you in your work. We believe that the most important factors in therapy are feeling like you are comfortable talking with your therapist and where you feel heard and understood. We start by learning who you are and what your life looks like. Instead of focusing just on what’s wrong, we pay attention to your whole life - what is working and what you would like to change. We believe therapy works best when we work together to examine the different sides of a problem together and provide support and space for you to decide how to move forward.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
