I work with clients who struggle with managing stress, anxiety, self-esteem or
relationship
issues. Common examples of issues these clients face are trouble setting boundaries, feeling overwhelmed,
relationship
issues, lack of self-esteem or difficulty managing their emotions. These clients are hoping to increase their coping skills in these areas and want resources to better navigate their symptoms or need a safe and nonjudgmental space to talk things through. Evaluating all aspects of life through a collaborative
relationship
, we can work to decide how my client can live a thriving, healthy life.

In early life, before we are even consciously aware of it, we begin to utilize the coping skills and self-talk language that the adults around us used. Later in life, we may realize that these coping skills and styles of self-talk are ineffective for us. I hope to help you reconstruct your internal dialogue to be healthier and more adaptive to your life circumstances. I hope to use our conversations as a means to help you reconnect with the authentic you. Therapy, to me, is about understanding the connection between one’s mind, body, and spirit. Once we learn that
relationship
, we can be our most present and confident selves.

I am a therapist in private practice with a caseload consisting of adults, adolescents, and varied family and
relationship
groupings. My approach is client centered and collaborative, tailoring each therapy to the individual or family culture. I am most interested in helping people improve their lives and harnessing their own strengths and resources. My techniques emphasize cultural competency and are informed by many theoretical foundations including psychodynamic theory, family systems theory, and cognitive-behavioral theory. My practice is currently only virtual due to the pandemic.

Your
relationship
with yourself is your most valuable asset when building relationships with others. This
relationship
with self also serves as a compass when exploring different parts of yourself such as sexuality, attachment, and experiences of harm. Many of us struggle with this primary
relationship
, which complicates concerns we may have around our sexual and relational lives. Exploring sex and relationships can be a disorienting and overwhelming experience. It is important to find spaces that feel comfortable and empowering while sifting through the many layers that impact sexual and relational health and functioning.

I incorporate multiculturalism and feminism into my clinical work to help demystify the stigmas present in many minority communities around counseling and mental health, offering a safe space for people of diverse backgrounds struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma & PTSD, grief & loss, racial & ethnic identity conflicts, and/or
relationship
challenges.
Seeking therapy is often a difficult experience for many individuals of diverse backgrounds due to cultural stigmas and stereotypes around mental health. Trying to then find the "right" therapist can feel impossible whether it's your first time looking, or even your third, fourth, or fifth time after another not-so-great encounter. I believe that a safe therapeutic space can open up many doors for minority populations seeking to better understand and cope with their mental health when approached with multicultural and feminist perspectives, which could also allow for empathic bonding that is often unavailable in other spaces.

"Therapy is like a car navigation system-the therapist is the GPS offering a number of directions to help reach your destination, but you are the driver! Often times we may need a little direction or help to deal with the excess baggage, wrong turns, and bumps along the way. Give me the opportunity to help you navigate the way to your best self."

No one experiences life in a vacuum. This is why I am so passionate about incorporating all of the various relationships, experiences, and cultural dimensions that make you who you are, into our work together. My job is to learn about each individual,
partner
, or family member, to understand their challenges and help them find strength and motivation towards change. Whether I am working with
couples
, families, or individuals, it is important for our work to consider the multiple larger systems that impact your life. Just as the networks we are a part of inevitably affect us, we too send ripples out to others.

Couples Counseling Therapists
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
