My background includes work with survivors of childhood trauma, LGBTQ+ clients, older adults, refugees, and young men.
While I prioritize self-exploration and insight, I also help clients gain concrete skills with which they can empower themselves. I use a variety of therapeutic modalities, including relational and psychodynamic frameworks, CBT, DBT, narrative therapy, and mindfulness. I approach my work with social justice and trauma-informed perspectives.

With that being said, I was also born into a society that often refuses to accept the necessity of therapy, especially for men and people of color.
In 20 years of being in this field, I have worked with children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. I have worked: intensive outpatient, high acuity inpatient, in Department of Corrections, and with DCFS. This blend of experiences has helped me form an approach that I believe benefits everyone regardless of their situation.

Individuals, couples, or families, regardless of any age or background, may benefit from a consult for psychodynamic therapy to seek help with a particular circumstance. People curious about the unconscious or the experience of therapy are encouraged to inquire. The main determining factor for therapy to be successful is the ability to form a trusting bond. Whether you are seeking therapy for the first time or reaching out again, I hope to offer a deeply meaningful treatment relationship.

As a kink-aware therapist and one that has experience working with polyamory and consensual non-monogamy, I hope to provide support to marginalized communities that face stigma, or that feel left out. I care deeply about social justice and work hard to dismantle oppression, as a vocal LGBTQ+ and feminist ally. As someone that became a therapist later in life, I apply my diverse experiences to my practice so that I may be more able to help you along your unique journey, or to uncover and address barriers that may prevent you from meeting personal goals or living a more authentic life.

Life is a journey with many challenges, and people often become stuck, whether in a way of feeling (sad, anxious, in pain) or a way of being (job, relationship, lifestyle). Such distress and confusion can make it hard to move forward. A therapist who genuinely understands and accepts you can help relieve that distress and mobilize your strengths to move forward in a meaningful direction. As a psychologist, I am skilled in helping you free yourself from being stuck to find the meaning, fulfillment and joy that also can be part of life's journey.

The best therapeutic relationships walk the thin line between comfort/validation on one side and growth/critical reflection on the other. With all my patients I work to meet them were they're at in the moment and create a warm, welcoming, and non-judgmental space. I view my role in therapy as ultimately helping you to build the life you want to live. By necessity, that means no two people will have identical journeys. That said, my hope for all I work with is that through therapy you will experience a reduction of distress in the short-term and gain insight and the tools to feel you can effectively manage stressors in the long-term.

Having been involved in the mental health field for over a decade, working across various setting (hospitals, VA, college) I now focus on those eager to enhance their creativity, community, and value-driven experiences. As the founder of an organization that has seen significant growth, my interest lies in supporting leaders—whether they are in creative roles, parenting, or mental health professions—who struggle with the demands of their work environments and the prioritization of their own healing. I believe relationships are formed in repair and I am useful to those seeking to deepen the interpersonal and cultural spaces.

Clients find my particular approach to therapy to be a casual directness that is personable and practical but does not shy away from the emotional difficulties often involved in pursuing self-reflection or achieving true movement in their lives. People come to me when they are ready to take a closer examination of themselves and their circumstances; gaining clarity and insight into their emotions, sense of self, values, and a deeper sense of what matters to them and what to do about it.

I am a gay therapist that finds meaning working with individuals with histories of trauma, complex family dynamics, and those in toxic relationships with themselves and others. I also work with LGBTQ couples and mixed neurotype couples who want to explore open relationships, polyamory, and how to feel more connected and safer with their partners. My role as a therapist is to help my clients understand the symptoms that once protected them from trauma with the wisdom and compassion of your present self and encourage them to feel confident while you practice new skills to look ahead.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
