As a clinical therapist and trauma-focused yoga instructor, Kath believes there is radical healing in the connection between mind and body. Kath collaborates with clients to reconnect with themselves in a supportive and healing way. They incorporate gentle
somatic
movement, breathe work, and grounding in their therapeutic sessions with clients. As a graduate of University of Chicago (SSA/Crown), Kath studied and sincerely connected with the mindful and values-based practices of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), where each client can feel empowered and validated in their experience.

Starting therapy is a brave and healthy decision. I do my best to offer a compassionate, non-judgmental space and to honor each client's individual journey towards health and wholeness. I believe humans are doing the best they can and at times need new tools to meet life's challenges. I affirm the basic goodness of people and the desire to be seen and understood. My professional goal is to support clients in making changes towards greater mental and emotional strength and ease. Clients tell me I am warm, empathic, funny, relational, and direct.

I have supplemented my traditional psychotherapy education with additional training in body-centered psychotherapy, including
Somatic
Experiencing and
Somatic
Experiencing Touch.
I am offering both virtual and in-person counseling services. I specialize in treating the issues that arise from unresolved trauma, difficult early life experiences, and perinatal trauma, anxiety and mood disorders. My goal is to support and empower my clients by using an integrative and collaborative stance, incorporating my background in psychodynamic psychotherapy with body-centered and mindfulness-based techniques. It is my hope that by equipping my clients with the skills to develop their own self-awareness, self-compassion, clarity, and peace, they can go on to experience more meaningful and fulfilling lives.

I am currently training in
Somatic
Experiencing, an approach that addresses trauma stored in the body.
If you are feeling stuck, I can be a guide in helping you find movement in your life. I will work with you to better understand your body and mind's ways of knowing. We may use creative practices like artmaking and body awareness along with discussion. Based on your goals, we will find what works best for you. I use a relational approach with a dash of humor in my practice, making space for both the hard things and the good stuff in life. Therapy should help you to feel that range more deeply, to feel you have options, and to feel capable of knowing what you need.

I am a student in the

Every person deserves to be valued for who they are and where they are in life. Life challenges can lead us to feel disconnected from ourselves. There can be great value in reclaiming our entire selves, with all we have been through and currently face, while stepping into the unknown. Being truly witnessed can help us reconcile our realities, regain hope, and remember our gifts. I wish to honor your life by offering a warm, accepting haven for you to exist, unpack, discover, heal, and co-create your life in light of who you are and the unique opportunities and challenges you experience. You deserve to feel at home with yourself.

There is no prescriptive way that
somatic
or movement work will look, I invite movers and non-movers alike into a space where we attend to ALL of you.
I believe my role as a therapist is to help you hold and find meaning in your pain, and delight with you in what is playful and pleasureful in your life. My approach is warm, direct, and collaborative. I am interested in creating a genuine, transparent and accountable relationship with you. My hope is that within our relationship we can identify and interrupt harmful patterns that may emerge in your relationships and reinforce patterns that bring you joy and connection. Therapy is inherently political, and I aim to engage with my clients in ways that are liberatory, anti-racist and affirming of their intersecting identities.

In addition to talk therapy, we can use
somatic
(body) therapy, such as spiritual approaches, yoga, movement, art, and mindfulness.
I work with adults who are struggling to build the types of relationships they crave. Some of my clients are looking for good friends and community, while others are struggling to find love. Still others find themselves pushing love away, even when it's available. What all of my clients have in common is that they feel anxious, powerless, or hopeless about their situations. Many of my clients are immigrants, and seek a therapist who is sensitive to how cultural factors and (im)migration impact their ability to successfully connect with others.

By integrating
somatic
experiences with thoughts and feelings, we can open ourselves up to the wealth of information our bodies hold.
We all come to therapy for a variety of reasons. You may be coping with the impact of large-scale events, a life transition, or something else that’s been on your mind or showing up in your body. I'm here to provide support and accountability throughout your process. By contextualizing your personal experiences within the larger systems we live in we can recognize systemic harm and facilitate healing. While give attention to your immediate concerns, I will also encourage you to tend to past experiences or parts of yourself that you may be avoiding. This can be key to unlocking insights and solutions for the challenges you face now.

I am a reiki and brainspotting-certified art therapist, yoga teacher. Embodiment &
somatic
work is a liberation practice, through which we can deepen our compassion for our body's personal, generational, collective stories. Because neurophysiological states inform the stories we tell ourselves, I primarily use Brainspotting as an approach to build regulation, unpack memories, pains and joys, internalized oppression, with the goal of expanding in your capacity for clarity and creativity. It is your birthright to remember fully, your soul origin and life purpose.

My approach is informed by training in attachment theory and
somatic
parts work, as well as grassroots justice movements.
As a relational therapist, I focus on supporting and witnessing clients in finding healing, connection, and conflict resolution and repair to ultimately build a life and relationships that honor their values and imagination. Therapy is an opportunity for liberation from dominant social narratives that don’t work for us as individuals or in our relationships, and I recognize the intergenerational and ongoing trauma of struggling against those dominant narratives. All relationships can benefit from this lens – whether they're romantic, platonic, brand new, long-term, with others, or with parts of yourself.

I also employ mindfulness and
somatic
psychotherapy approaches to help clients find their own experience of inner calm and resourcefulness.
Even as you come into therapy wanting to change, I understand that change can be difficult and confusing at times. I hold the space as a compassionate guide for you to rest into your own self-awareness. We will collaborate to help you discover your authentic path to healing and wholeness. My approach is based on creating genuine interpersonal connection and cultivating mind/body/soul awareness through helping you deepen and trust your connection to self. From this place, you will find more freedom of choice, feeling of purpose and sense of agency in your life.

Along with a healthy dose of compassion and humor, I use mind-body/nervous system practices, am working on a
Somatic
Experiencing certificate, and work from an Intuitive Eating and HAES perspective.
It's a total crap shoot trying to choose a therapist, and you've been through this before. You've gone to therapy but felt like the counselor didn't get you, or you're looking for more depth and different perspective to address low mood, anxiousness, self image, grief, boundaries, or life transitions and transformations. Perhaps you find your thoughts and feelings don't quite align and you're feeling curious about that. It's like a sense of "I KNOW this, but what I FEEL and how I react is different." Maybe you're wondering why relationships feel unsatisfying and you'd like to cultivate more pleasurable experiences and interactions.

I have spent the last 13 years becoming formally trained in therapeutic models that are both restorative and result producing (Internal Family Systems,
Somatic
Internal Family Systems, EMDR, Art Therapy).
When we are able to truly understand ourselves and our relationships, we can build a life of genuine meaning and connection. Many people enter into therapy only to find themselves gaining small amounts of insight that produce little or no changes in their life. My therapeutic methods produce results that not only change the way we feel about ourselves in the world but change our behaviors. I am respectful of the fact that everyone's pace and tolerance to different interventions varies. My work is reflective of the care and respect I have for each and every client as individuals.

I have specialized training in traumatic stress and stress injuries and offer a gentle but direct body-mind and nature-focused approach to integrative healing:
Somatic
Experiencing, Polyvagal Theory, EMDR, Trauma-Sensitive Yoga and Nature-based therapy.
Clients who most appreciate working with me are seeking an integrative mind-body therapy experience. Holding a safe, nonjudgmental, and inclusive space for you to "unpack" and rewire, my approach is considered holistic and collaborative. I work "bottom up" to increase body awareness and regulation in the nervous system, which can facilitate profound healing and change. For those seeking deeper regulation and more sustainable wellness, I offer nature-based healing interventions.

Somatic Therapists
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.
Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.
Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.
What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
