If you are feeling stuck and uncertain how to make changes therapy can help. I work with adults and adolescents to overcome doubt, change unhealthy patterns, improve relationships, and find healthy ways to cope. For some that means approaching the things they avoid, taking down emotional walls, changing their substance use, gaming/internet use, or other unhealthy behaviors. I specialize in anxiety and mood issues, substance use, addictive behaviors, and men's issues . The practice website provides additional info about my experience and approach. If you would like to connect to help determine fit, I offer a free phone consultation .

I provide individual, couples, and group therapy with a specialization in men's issues .
The decision to pursue therapy requires vulnerability and risk. Choosing a therapist who understands this reality is important. Like most adults, you may be seeking therapy to explore why your relationships are unsatisfying or why you feel unfulfilled. You may hope to understand how painful emotions like shame, sadness, and anger have affected you. Many adults seek solutions on their own, only to feel stuck in repetitive cycles of behavior that produce momentary relief.

The decision to seek assistance from someone outside of your family, social, and work circles takes courage regardless of the reason. This step may seem like a giant leap when you typically consider yourself a self-sufficient, problem-solving, working professional! I strive to create a healthy therapeutic relationship in which you feel safe enough to identify strengths and areas for growth to overcome the barriers to your goals. I have particular interest in assisting working professionals who are struggling with grief, loss, and men's issues .

Areas of particular interest are career changes; men's issues ; relationship issues; gay men and coming out; grief and loss; trauma; depression and anxiety; the creative process; premarital counseling.
Therapy is a healthy resource. Everyone needs an objective, non-judgmental person to talk with in a confidential and warm environment. Sometimes you feel something is not quite right, but you can't put your finger on it. Other times, you know exactly what it is. Either way, telling your story can help figure things out by identifying your patterns of thought, behavior and emotions. Are any of them getting in the way? Together we discover the obstacles to achieving a stronger sense of well-being. Most importantly, we figure out how you can remove obstacles to leading a happier, more authentic life.

Life is difficult, and leaves scars, scars that are often unseen and linger below the surface. Scars that make you feel unseen, unheard, unloved and unimportant. Scars that dim your light and make you feel empty. We each are capable of healing our scars and shining brightly even in the midst of chaos. Oftentimes our light is overshadowed by daily stressors or personal issues that negatively impact our lives and become unbearable to cope with. As your therapist I am here to assist you as you work towards refocusing your light to shine as brightly as you deserve it to shine.

It’s hard to put yourself out there…To allow yourself to be vulnerable…To really connect with others. When you do, you practically tie yourself up in knots replaying what you said – what you did. You make promises to yourself that somehow next time you’ll do things differently…that you’ll feel different….that you won’t be full of regret and shame. Regardless of whether you spend most of your time at school or work, Chicago can be a hard place to get your footing. Looking around you, everyone seems connected. Everyone seems confident. When will you stop second-guessing yourself?

You are a whole person who deserves to be seen, supported, and given access to the tools that can help you thrive through whatever you are going through. I am both sex and religion positive and enjoy working with people who are struggling, or have strengths that they’d like to access, in either area. My main passions include men’s mental health, relationships, and intimacy and I believe that the greatest change in all of these things comes from working on it with others— working with couples and families is the way I most enjoy tackling issues!

Life can be overwhelming! Sometimes we feel like we don’t measure up or fit in. We can start to feel tired and alone. Maybe we can’t seem to concentrate on work, school or other important areas of our lives. Sometimes what seems like a simple task for others makes us feel nervous and overwhelmed. A therapist is both a safety net and a guide, someone to help you discover and recover from what life throws at you. I will strive to make the time spent together a safe place for you to learn more about you, your uniqueness, and your strengths.

Through the adversity of life, our relationships are what keep us going. Whether it is a partner, parent, sibling, or child, they are the other wing that keeps us afloat. Carving an hour out for ourselves is difficult, but like all things worth doing, the rewards outweigh the challenges.

Oftentimes, the most basic need that people have is to feel like they're being heard. I am experienced in working with individuals who have experienced trauma and struggle w/ depression and anxiety symptoms. I have completed extensive research regarding PTSD and depression in African American men and am comfortable working with any population and gender. Clients should come to see me because I work to understand their behavior as individuals in the context of the systems we exist within, whether they be work, school, family, or community.

My psychotherapy with adult individuals is active and collaborative. We begin with discussing what precipitated your visit and attempt to understand why you are where you are from a perspective that is developmental and non-pathologizing. I am skilled at weighing the relative contributions of what is within an individual and what is between individuals and within troubled relationships.

Sometimes it is time to just stop. Stop believing that voice in your head that is so demanding, so critical, so unkind. Stop running, stop fighting, stop avoiding, stop numbing. Sometimes it is time to start. Start waking up, start feeling more alive, start coming home, start loving yourself and others more deeply than ever before. Becoming more present in this constantly beeping and flickering culture of ours is the major personal challenge of the 21st century. Feelings of joy and contentment take place now, not in the future or the past. Experiencing your feelings fully is the key to opening the door to a more satisfying life.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
