While I have experience working with clients who have problems dealing with anxiety, depression , self-esteem, anger management, and grief, my ideal client has a desire to change and improve their quality of life regardless of their presenting problem. However, change is difficult as we are resistant to it more often that not. I believe through the building of a genuine therapeutic relationship, people can be more open to change and growth. As human beings, connection and support are necessities, especially when we are trying to feel better.

At times we can experience pain, suffering, and troubles with coping and relationships. You may be feeling anxious, depressed , or unsure why things don't feel quite right. At any point, we have the opportunity to help ourselves, discover who we are, and find where we want to go. Engaging in therapy is a courageous act, and I believe therapy offers a place for true growth and transformation. Long-lasting and meaningful change will take time, but there is hope and possibility for a way forward. A strong and trusting therapeutic relationship between the client and therapist is the vehicle in which this change and healing can occur.

Whether you're dealing with racial and cultural oppression, anxiety, trauma or depression .
In a fast, busy, and ever-isolating world, it can feel challenging to stay in-tune with yourself and connected to what’s most important to you. Sometimes all we need is a listening ear, a space to process what life throws at us, and to remember that we’re not alone. As a therapist, I offer a non-judgemental space for expression, reflection, and reconnection. When you’re ready, we’ll work together to support your goals, identify and build on your strengths, and challenge you to live as your best self. I am an artist and an art therapist, so if you're game I'd love to incorporate creative elements into our work.

My areas of specialization include body image/eating issues, depression , anxiety, life transitions, and women's health issues, such as sexual victimization, recovery from breast cancer, and assertiveness.
Compassion. Insight. Empowerment. I'm committed to blending clinical expertise with warmth and respect for each client's wisdom, to create a healing, growthful partnership. A hallmark of my approach is cultivating mindfulness: nonjudgmental, moment by moment awareness that promotes living more fully, less reactively, and making better use of one's resources. Whether addressing depression , anxiety, stress, past trauma or current relationships, I begin by creating a space of acceptance. Here, we cultivate insight: the ability to observe accurately, think clearly, and choose wisely. Together, we explore options, drawn from clinical scholarship, collective wisdom, and clients' evolving self-awareness.

These commonly include anxiety, sadness, depression , grief, or negative self-image, and may result in the development of problematic coping strategies.
Hello. My name is Daniel, and I am a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Illinois, where I have been providing mental health services for over 22 years. Regardless of background, financial status, or the countless other aspects of ourselves that make each of us unique, one universal fact that impacts us all is that life is inherently unpredictable. As such, we all face unexpected changes and events ranging anywhere between extremely positive and brutally challenging, all increasing our risk of feeling unprepared, isolated, and possibly overwhelmed, having no idea of what to do next.

You deserve support if you’re experiencing anxiety, depression or the lingering effects of trauma and loss. If you're dealing with challenging life transitions or difficult personal and professional relationships, psychotherapy can be a valuable resource to help you navigate and cope more constructively.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
