Suicidal Ideation Therapists in River North, Chicago, IL
I enjoy working with individuals, couples, and families, on a variety of topics and issues, such as consensual/ethical non-monogamous relationships, persons struggling with sexual/sexuality and gender issues, personality disorders, suicidal ideation and addictions.
My work is heavily influenced from a psychodynamic perspective, as well as systems, and solution-focused. In our work together, we will investigate patterns from your childhood and the role they play now, and make sense of your relationships. Together we will explore how you see and experience the world around you.

As a relational, psychodynamic therapist, I believe that healing happens through authentic connection and a deep understanding of early childhood experiences, which set the stage for adult life. I work with individuals, couples, and families across the lifespan, offering support through the unique challenges of each life stage. I know that starting therapy can feel intimidating or uncertain, and I’m here to offer a space where you feel genuinely seen, heard, and supported, while also challenging you to stay true to your goals.

Success on the outside, but empty on the inside? You’ve checked every box. You’ve listened to the podcasts and read the books. Yet long-lasting change remains elusive. You are tired of simply managing symptoms. You see the same patterns repeating. Whether it’s a loud crisis or a slow fading, you no longer recognize the life you’ve built. It’s time to stop just coping. Let’s slow down and move toward emotional clarity and transformation.

Matthew Cramer treats people struggling with: addictive use of substances or behaviors, anxiety, depression, relationship stress, job stress and the lasting impact of trauma. If you're considering therapy but aren't sure, then you've come to the right place. Most people who see Matthew have little to no experience with therapists or therapy. Many are uncomfortable asking for help, believing it is a sign of "weakness." Others come from families where "staying strong," and keeping "personal business" in the family was the norm. Whatever the story, they are able to open up to him.

I understand that entering therapy is not always an easy task. It takes courage to ask for help. As psychologist Viktor Frankl once said, “In some ways suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning, such as the meaning of a sacrifice.” I work to help you find meaning. It’s important to me to provide you with a safe, nurturing environment. I am trained in EMDR, a modality used to help process traumatic memories and the cognitions associated with them.

While life is constantly changing, we are too — evolving, growing, and sometimes struggling to keep up. In a world that often tells us who we should be, it can be hard to explore who we really are. Therapy can be a space to feel seen, not just for who you are now, but for who you're becoming. I work with young adults and teens navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, ADHD, life transitions, shifting family dynamics, anger, and self-esteem. I value diversity and believe our identities, backgrounds, and lived experiences shape how we move and heal. You are worthy of support, capable of growth, and are more than enough.

Clinical experiences and life experiences continue to teach me that each of us has a unique experience of being human—Each of us lives a life of depth, complexity, relationships, and hardships.
In my private practice, I work with adults of various ages. I frequently work with people needing help with significant life changes (i.e., changes in relationship/marital status, geographical moves, career changes, having children, beginning college, retirement, etc.), anxiety and stress, depression, social difficulties, and family troubles.

I enjoy working with teens, adults, and couples from all backgrounds. My clinical interests are varied, and to name just a few, include: Mood Disorders, Relationships, Identity, Race, Life Transitions, Sports Psychology/Performance, Men's Issues, and Trauma. My approach is integrative yet it is rooted in existential psychotherapy, an attentiveness to diversity and identity, and a focus on the impact of systems on one's functioning. Outside of work I practice self-care by working out and practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, reading, watching History docs, kicking it with friends, collecting books/vinyl, and exploring.

With over 25 years of experience I have worked with a range of issues and populations. My main approach to therapy is cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) in order to process thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that contribute to distorted thinking and behavior, therefore affecting emotional well-being. The goal is to challenge and reframe so that the client achieves their personal goals, to cope with life transitions and obstacles. I also utilize Attachment Theory, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy. I've assisted clients with depression, anxiety, grief/loss, trauma, life transitions, and various others.

I deeply value the unique journey of every individual and couple I work with. I believe that understanding your own story and experiences can be transformative, and I’m here to support you in that process. My goal is to create a warm, collaborative space where you feel safe and understood, respecting your identity and choices throughout our work together. While I draw from various therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral, person centered, strength based, solution-focused, and Gottman method for couples therapy, I frequently use the EMDR approach to address and resolve various distressing experiences.

You may be here because relationships feel confusing, painful, or harder than they should be, perhaps shaped by earlier experiences that still echo in the present. You might notice strong emotional reactions, persistent self-doubt, or patterns in close relationships that feel difficult to change. Therapy can be a space to make room for the full range of what life brings, including both its joys and its sorrows. While we may not be able to choose the struggles we face, we can work together to understand how they developed and to choose how we meet them in ways that feel more grounded, intentional, and aligned with your values.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
