Spirituality Therapists in River North, Chicago, IL

This belief shapes my practice, which is especially focused on supporting women of color, adult children of immigrant parents, individuals working to manage their anxiety/overthinking, & individuals exploring their spirituality, cultural identity, self-worth, & relationship attachments.
I aspire to see the world how you do while also exploring new insights and frontiers with honesty and compassion. I gravitate towards using attachment work, polyvagal theory, somatic/body work, and parts/inner-child work. I also aim to create a sanctuary to process the impact of the oppressive, capitalist structures that shape our lives.

Integrating spirituality into our work can offer guidance and clarity, especially in moments of feeling stuck.
I know that therapy can feel intimidating—opening up to someone new isn’t easy. That’s why I meet you where you are, creating a space of trust and safety with empathy and patience. In a capitalist society that pushes us to always be productive, I encourage slowing down—tuning into our breath, bodies, and heartbeats—to reconnect with ourselves and the Earth.

Likewise, if spirituality is a core of who you are, I will likely draw on that as a strength if it feels okay to you!
——Dr. Hernandez is not accepting forensic/court-ordered services at this time——Therapy is an opportunity to be heard. I use a multi-cultural and anti-oppression framework to work with the opportunities and barriers faced by clients who hold marginalized identities, especially those within the QTIPOC community. I would be honored to walk with you and your family as you navigate sexuality, gender identity, coming out, and transitioning. I am experienced in working with adults and children on anxiety, depression, grief, ADHD, parenting, relationship issues, and family conflict.

I deeply value the unique journey of every individual and couple I work with. I believe that understanding your own story and experiences can be transformative, and I’m here to support you in that process. My goal is to create a warm, collaborative space where you feel safe and understood, respecting your identity and choices throughout our work together. While I draw from various therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral, person centered, strength based, solution-focused, and Gottman method for couples therapy, I frequently use the EMDR approach to address and resolve various distressing experiences.

The first question most therapists will ask is "what brings you to therapy?" Well, I have a different question to ask, have you ever found yourself stuck in a loop, replaying the same thoughts over and over? Picture this: an event, a conversation, a stressor, playing on repeat in your mind, leaving you mentally drained with no way out.

Every person has the potential to live with more freedom, joy, ease, and love, and therapy supports us to realize this potential. Many of my clients have experienced various forms of relational trauma — including wounding that has occurred in intimate relationships or in childhood — and yearn to heal from these experiences and find healthier ways of dealing with addiction or problematic substance use, stress, anxiety, depression, compulsive behaviors, relationship difficulties, and other challenging emotions. My goal is to help you live with more peace, acceptance, autonomy, confidence, satisfaction, intimacy, and joy.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
