I work with clients who struggle with managing stress, anxiety, self-esteem or relationship issues. Common examples of issues these clients face are trouble setting boundaries, feeling overwhelmed, relationship issues, lack of self-esteem or difficulty managing their emotions. These clients are hoping to increase their coping skills in these areas and want resources to better navigate their symptoms or need a safe and nonjudgmental space to talk things through. Evaluating all aspects of life through a collaborative relationship, we can work to decide how my client can live a thriving, healthy life.

Life's moments are filled with joy, disappointment, triumph and challenges. Many of these experiences leave us feeling exhilarated, overwhelmed and in search of a new path in a different direction. I believe that the therapeutic environment is a safe space where mutual trust, honesty and insightful dialogue allow you to nurture, heal and replenish yourself. The therapeutic relationship is essential to my clinical approach; a collaborative effort to support and challenge as we establish and progress toward identified goals.

My belief in the psychotherapeutic process is experiential and interpersonal at the core. I practice from an integrative clinical perspective with an emphasis on psychodynamic psychology. I believe the relationship between therapist and client is an essential condition of the work, as this is the connection that allows for empathy and the mutual understanding of experience. In addition to the centrality of the therapeutic relationship, I aim to facilitate the co-construction of a creative space relative to each person that is safe, open and meaningful in which to explore whatever is on one's mind or heart.

In addition I work with couples to help increase and enrich intimacy in relationships.
I work with people who are struggling through transitions. Sometimes the movement between life phases brings about struggles, questions, and the need for behavior change. My active, and direct style will challenge you to examine the questions you have and work together to identify strategies to relieve your distress. I utilize a very direct style with an emphasis on "telling the truth" and learning to increase one's accountability in their life. In short, the dialogue between us will help challenge you to obtain the necessary changes in your life, appreciating how you got here and where to go next.

Therapy is at heart a relationship, two minds and spirits attempting to form a healing alliance.
In my 25 years of practice, I have learned some important truths: what happened to us doesn’t have to determine what happens for us; under the right conditions, the human spirit orients toward growth and wholeness; therapy can be an important addition to the healing process. People come to therapy for many reasons, often the initial phase of the work is in improving coping strategies so you can feel better sooner. Beyond symptomology, understanding you and your unique context are essential for unearthing longstanding behavior patterns. Therapy is about revising your story and making you the author of the next chapter.

In couples/relationship therapy, I help partners navigate nonmonogamy, explore sex and intimacy, and hold space for difficult conversations.
Accepting new virtual clients. Relationships are opportunities for growth and exploration and yet can be the sources of some of our most painful hurts and losses. Therapy itself is a relationship and I provide space for clients to understand past experiences and restore their capacity to build connection and enjoy pleasure. Working with both individuals and partnerships, I help clients deepen and organize their emotional experience to understand relationship patterns and foster authenticity. I have a fierce commitment to my client’s wellbeing and bring deep humility and nonjudgement to this work.

Are you struggling in your relationships? Are you and your partner experiencing conflict that you can't seem to resolve? I can help you understand the underlying issues and needs that lead to withdrawal or anger, and work with you to re-establish strong bonds. Together we will identify the negative patterns that repeat, learn how to interrupt those and to instead create positive conflict resolution skills. I am passionate about the work I do as a therapist, and I respect each person's struggle and strengths.

I've been doing psychotherapy with adolescents, adults, couples, and families since 1986.
My work is psychoanalytic, which means I attend to feelings/beliefs that emerge from one's lived experience/history and that interfere with living fully, creatively, and freely in the present. I believe that psychotherapy, at its best, is a deeply transforming experience that emerges within an intimate and private space in which you are listened to, understood, and responded to with intelligence and compassion.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
