I specialize in working with individuals with eating disorders and addictions. I believe entering into a therapeutic relationship requires courage and just enough hope and willingness to begin. You've been turning to a substance: alcohol, other drugs, an eating disorder, they stopped "working," but you've lost control, you want to stop and discover than you cannot. You need to risk trusting someone. Profound shame accompanies these illnesses and this shame interferes with asking for help. These are illnesses that robs all that an individual values in their life, therefore asking for help is vital, recovery cannot be done alone.

My belief in the psychotherapeutic process is experiential and interpersonal at the core. I practice from an integrative clinical perspective with an emphasis on psychodynamic psychology. I believe the relationship between therapist and client is an essential condition of the work, as this is the connection that allows for empathy and the mutual understanding of experience. I am a Clinical Psychologist specializing in health psychology with 16 years of experience in weight management and bariatric. Many of my clients present with co-morbidities and are living with chronic medical illnesses. Some of the areas addressed in treatment include emotional eating, binge eating, body image issues, depression, anxiety, and other mood related disorders. I offer pre-surgical bariatric psychological evaluations, brief and long-term therapy using an eclectic approach incorporating cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, mindfulness, family systems and interpersonal therapy. I work closely with my client's medical providers in order to provide the most robust care.

The first question most therapists will ask is "what brings you to therapy?" Well, I have a different question to ask, have you ever found yourself stuck in a loop, replaying the same thoughts over and over? Picture this: an event, a conversation, a stressor, playing on repeat in your mind, leaving you mentally drained with no way out.

At different points in life we can find ourselves "stuck," feeling anxious, overwhelmed, defeated, exhausted, depressed, or feeling disconnected from ourselves or others. Sometimes something just feels "off." Therapy is an opportunity to make positive changes in one's life and relationships. By gaining an understanding of our needs, motives, and fears, we can move out of an "auto-pilot" mode and into an active role in our lives. I work alongside clients to help them develop awareness of their options, identify self-defeating patterns, and help remove the obstacles creating distress. Together we shed light on what has been neglected.

Joshua Della Villa is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Illinois. He has a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Joshua provides a nonjudgmental space where people can feel comfortable to share their story. He listens carefully for elements that may be just out of reach for the patient and carefully offers interventions to expand the cutting edge of their consciousness. Joshua's primary responsibility early on is to deepen the relationship with the patient and to work with the dynamic in the room to begin the process of exploration, insight, and change.
